n a town of the same name, Vastseliina Castle  is located in Southeast Estonia. This is also on the eastern border of medieval Livonia.  As the shape indicates, it is a fortress, one of a string of border fortresses built in the 13th and 14th century by the Livonian order to protect their territory against the Russians.

Construction of Vastseliina castle started in 1342. In 1353 it is reported that a cross was seen standing without any support on the castle's chapel altar, making the castle a destination for pilgrims during the next few centuries.  It is in a state of severe ruin, though the brickwork of the tower looks to have been magnificent at one point.

Thank you Capt Marga for bringing us some marvelous examples of castles. It's always interesting to find out about new castles that other people have discovered.
But now we're moving on to Norway. Map coordinates 60.401353, 5.321019
Sverresborg is a fortress and former castle situated in the Norwegian city of Bergen. It was built by king Sverre Sigurdsson (ca. 1150–1202) in the mid 1180's, 250 meters northeast of Bergenhus fortress. It is thought that the fortress had an outer wall of stone and inner buildings of wood. A saga mentions that 600 men and 40 noble women lived in the fortress ca. 1207. The castle fell to the baglers and was destroyed, but was rebuilt by Håkon Jarl. The baglers destroyed it a second time and it has been rebuilt several times. Much of the present day fortifications are from the 17th century and the fortress participated in the Battle of Vågen. The last known expansions took place during the Napoleonic wars.

The village of B?dzin originated in the 9th century.[1] The local wooden fort, that the records show existed as early as the 11th century was destroyed during the Tatar invasion in 1241, and subsequently rebuilt. During the reign of Casimir the Great the castle received an upgrade from wooden fortress to a stone one, and the stone fort reached it's completion as early as in 1348.

Bac Castle is in one of the oldest towns in Vojvodina, Serbia. The archeological research showed that an ancient Roman settlement existed in this area. Bac was first mentioned in 535 AD, in a letter written by Eastern Roman emperor Justinian. In 873 AD, the town was mentioned as Avar fortress, inhabited by both, Avars and Slavs. In this time, the Saint Methodius, a creator of the Slavic alphabet, converted to Christianity Slavs that lived in Backa and Bac.
Map coordinates 45.393623, 19.222554
The fortress itself was built and rebuilt many times since the first walls were raised in about 1085. During the war between Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary, in the 16th century, Serbian despot Stevan Berislavi successfully defended the Bac fortress from the Ottomans for a long time until the fortress finally fell.

What the heck; let's stay in Scotland another day.
Craigievar Castle is a pinkish harled castle six miles (10 km) south of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was the seat of Clan Sempill. The setting is among scenic rolling foothills of the Grampian Mountains. The contrast of its massive lower story structure to the finely sculpted multiple turrets, gargoyles and high corbelling work create a classic fairytale appearance.
map coordinates 57.173056, -2.734167
The great seven-storey castle was completed in 1626 and originally had more defensive elements including a walled courtyard with four round towers; only one of the round towers remains today.
