Vinicko Kale is an ancient ruin located on the hill above the town of Vinica, Republic of Macedonia.

In 1978, 5 fragments of terra-cotta icons were discovered in Vinicko Kale, which shows that it was inhabited from Neolithic times to the Middle Ages.

Castillo de of Xàtiva is a castle located in the city of Xàtiva near Valencia, Spain.

It is strategically located on the ancient roadway Via Augusta leading from Rome across the Pyrenees and down the Mediterranean coast, with evidence showing occupation since Paleolithic times. In 1092, the castle fell into the occupation of the Almoravids Dynasty who were expelled in an uprising that took place in 1145.

Valkenburg Castle is a ruined castle in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands.

In the year 1115, fortifications were erected at the site by Gosewijn I, Lord of Valkenburg. This original wooden keep survived until 1122 when it was destroyed under siege by Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor. The current ruins are those of the castle rebuilt in the 14th century. Valkenburg is the only elevated castle in the Netherlands.

Château de Ménessaire is near a town of the same name in France.

A castle dating back to the 12th century, it was heavily remodelled in the 17th century. The moat and foundations of the outer bastions can still be seen. It used to be owned by the Fussey family which was related to the Condés.

Tuczno Castle is a castle in Tuczno, Wa?cz County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, northwestern Poland.

The Wedel family built the castle in the middle of the 14th century and called it Tutz. Only after the 16th century were heavy modifications made by the owners up until 1739.

The Viana do Alentejo Castle is a Portuguese castle in Viana do Alentejo, Evora, Portugal.

King Don Dinis (1279-1325) took possession of this area, passing the Carta de Foral to the town in 1313, a document which is known as Viana-de-a-par-de-Alvito, regulating the relations and giving them one hundred pounds for their works fortification. Viana do Alentejo, became synonymous with the noble title of the Meneses family, first Count of Viana , who stood out in the campaigns of Portuguese Morocco in the fifteenth century. Today the castle and its interior buildings are in various states of restoration.

Castelo de Terena  is a Portuguese castle in Alandroal, Évora, Portugal.

Tradition says that this castle was built by the king, Don Dinis in the 1300's, but documentaion points to its founding by Don João I who patronized the town and the local Ordem de Avis.

Lazar Castle is a castle located in Lazarea, Harghita County, Romania.

The earliest mention of Lazar is 1450. The citadel is named after Lazar nobile family and it is built on a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Ladoga is a castle in Russia, located on the Volkhov River near Lake Ladoga.

Dendrochronology suggests that Ladoga was founded in 753, but the castle in its current configuration was built in the eaarly 12th century.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Ladoga functioned as a trade outpost of the powerful Novgorod Republic.

Maglic is a medieval fortress in Ibar gorge 20 km south from Kraljevo in Serbia.

Castle Maglic was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by Stephen the First Crowned or his son Urosh I.

Dunglass Castle, situated in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, is a ruinous castle.

Bojnice Castle is a castle in Bojnice, Slovakia.

Bojnice Castle was first mentioned in written records in 1113, in a document held at the Zobor Abbey. Originally built as a wooden fort, it was gradually replaced by stone, with the outer walls being shaped according to he uneven rocky terrain.  The moat is completely man-made and lined with stone.
