So I have planning on buying a new hat seeing as my hat, though lovingly made by my mother, is way to small and gives me a terrible headache. I was thinking of getting a tall hat to match my black and gold but cant figure out where to get one.
Does anyone have suggestions on a good place to purchase a nice looking tall hat, or if there are any other preference of hats that may tickle my fancy?

I have a hat from these people & it is gorgeous:  www.lapalomahats.com

I also have a top hat from this Etsy company, which I can't praise too highly:  They make other styles, too:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/GypsyLadyHats?ga_search_query=spaulding+hat&ga_search_type=all&ga_page=&includes%5B0%5D=tags&includes%5B1%5D=title

You might try these. http://www.talltoad.net/tall.html

It depends on if you are looking for a true tall hat or a "riding hat" as that is what Tall Toad has not a real tall hat.  If you look at my avatar, that is a true tall hat of the period whereas a "riding hat" is shorter and slants back a bit.  Also with Tall Toad hats you have to be careful in the rain as they are plaster based and they will wilt in the rain.

I didn't know that, James. Learned something new.  :)

There used to be an amazing hat merchant at TRF. They are based in Texas, but cannot think of the name. Petrhaps someone can help. Anyway, they had the most beautiful selection of tall hats and they were made with plastic mesh as the base, so no weather concerns.

I can vouch for Blonde swan. I have the riding hat on in my avatar and love it.

Here's the shop I was looking for:

James, did you have yours made for you?  I see that style in paintings of the period, but I've not seen them for sale on a site.

I was looking into the true tall hats, but i wouldn't mind a riding hat either.

I had been looking at this site a while back and couldn't remember them! So far I think these are my favorite.
Thanks for all the links!

I had mine made for me.  She no longer makes them but I've found someone at VARF that makes them as well so that is where I get them made now.  They don't have a site although I can check with them if anyone is interested and see if they would make one for them.  Let me konw.  Hats are a pain for me to make so I don't make them, I have them made.

I would like to find a hat that would go well with my King's Garb that I could fabricate a crown for.  It would be a lot lighter that that cast iron one I currently use.  God what headaches I get at the end of the day.  Now this goes back a bit further than our period, but If any of you have seen the movie BECKET,  the hat that John Gielgud(king of France) wears when he meets Richard Burton(Becket) on the shores of France is kind of what I had in mind.

I can highly recommend The Blonde Swan as well.  Quality goods made by people who will back up their stuff.

My favorite hat maker is on Etsy, www.caribbeanrosepirate.etsy.com.  I purchased the pirate hat I'm wearing in my photo from Caribbean Rose last year and it is absolutely gorgeous.  For me, the best part is the fact that she's based right here in MD and was willing to meet me near my work to deliver my hat due to a show deadline.  I purchased one of her tilt toppers a few months later and again, absolutely fabulous.

I agree.  My Cavalier Hat comes from the Blonde Swan, bought at MiRF.  I bought Lady Heather an Elizabethan Riding Hat from them as well.  Very good quality, and if you check out their site, they have a very large variety.
