Chapter 7:  The Challenge

A pair of fishermen are captured as you sail toward the eastern shore of Florida.  The crew turns to you for advice on how to handle this situation since these men are not truly enemies.  You don't have enough food and water to keep them captive and aboard the ships.

If you lie to these men and have Deception skill at the Exceptional or Master level you convince them that you are group of merchants and smugglers.  To make it even a better lie you give the men one of your silver coins (if you have any remaining) for the fish they have caught.  It is a good falsehood and you know the fishermen believe it.

If you threaten the fishermen and have the Intimidation skill at the Master level you scare them with the promise of violence so badly they will never speak of this encounter again!  Anything less than a Mastery of the Intimidation skill and after a day or two these men will talk of being captured by pirates and threatened with a cruel death!

Of course killing them is a guarantee that they will never speak of this day again.  Dead men tell no tales.  One of Black Edward Ehresmann's puritan soldiers gladly kills the hated papist fishermen and dumps their bodies over the side.  The tiny fishing boat is plundered for supplies and then scuttled.

---

The Neptune's Daughter is signaled by Robert Town on his ship the Horizon.  The Horizon has developed a leak and must head back to friendly waters for a repair.  This is a huge disappointment as it reduces your forces to fewer than 200 buccaneers.  A bad omen to the future of the shore raid against San Zanita.

A day passes and according to the charts you enter the tiny string of islands that spiral off the southern tip of Spanish held Florida.  You are enjoying a moment's repast talking with Adam Cotton and Mister Gallant when you are approached by Black Edward.  A crowd of buccaneers gathers and Black Edward accuses you of conspiring with the Spanish captive (even if you didn't speak with Pedro) and being a traitor to the articles!  The crew of Neptune's Daughter mumbles threats of violence against you.  Then Black Edward slaps your face and challenges you to a duel to settle this affair!  Captain Gilbert has sensed the bad blood between the two of you and agrees to let you settle this in combat on a small island.

Do you accept the challenge to duel or refuse?
