About a year ago (?), somebody (I want to say Mollymishap?) posted a link to a site with information on period smocking (shirts and chemises).  I think it was mostly information about German garb.

Does anyone have that (or a similar site) bookmarked?

I don't know if this is the same one, I don't think I was here to see that other one but I do have a couple of links

http://www.smockingstore.com/what.html

http://www.pleatworkembroidery.com/

http://www.creativekeepsake.com/guide.html

That is all I have at the moment,

Hope it helps!!

And though neither German nor 1 year old, this is also an excellent site: http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/workbox/extcam.htm

I think I know the one you want, it WAS www.pleatwork.com/handout.  However, I went to the site prior to posting to make sure I had the right one and it is no longer about smocking.  Sigh, I should have printed it out as it was particularly good information.

Huzzah!!

I think it was the pleatworkembroidery.com site that Cilean linked to--it looks like what I was picturing in my mind.  Mythrin, check that one out; maybe it's the one you remember, too?

Thanks, all!!  I know what I'll be doing this afternoon... :)

Hmmm...wasn't me.  I think it was Lord Paulet (has he made it to our liferaft, BTW?) or KateXXXXX that posted on Canadian Smocking, but I did find a site at the time with clearer instructions (to me at any rate).  Here's the only link I have in my bookmarks: http://www.savvyseams.com/techniques/canadian.php

Your a "gem" - I could not resist ;D.  Thanks, I am printing the handout this time.

I made a nice German style apron using that technique to attach a huge apron to the tiny front panel and I liked the results. The more correct style has the apron being nearly a dress with similar front & back panels with shoulder straps attaching them.  I did not have enough fabric for that but the apron does loosely wrap almost completely around me.  I am using it for my dying demos to protect my garb and soon it will be authentically stained. I enjoyed doing it enough I would like to try it again so I was disappointed to think I had lost that link.
