Ahoy ye swabs! I've been horribly remiss in getting the word out on the RF.com forums, but here it is! The official invitation for ALL our renaissancefestival.com friends to attend the most excellent and auspicious event that is: BrethrenCon 2010 and the 4th Annual Buccaneer Bash, which this year will be UNDEAD themed!

BrethrenCon is Denver's first, best (and only) pirate convention! For those of you what haven't been keeping track, the Sunken Bones Society has been putting on an event every Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day weekend since 2007 called the Buccaneer Bash. Well this year we felt we could no longer continue just throwing the best pirate party in Denver. We felt the need to create something more. And thusly BrethrenCon was born.

This most excellent celebration is being held on Saturday, September 18th, 2010 beginning promptly at 12:00 noon! That's right, one day before International Talk Like a Pirate Day! This year it's a one-day con, but next year we're hoping to expand it into an entire weekend! So help us grow and make this one of the best pirate events in the nation!

We've got a fantastic lineup slated for this year, including a delicious Caribbean style feast provided by our hotel (grilled mahi-mahi, jerk chicken, and fried plantains are all on the menu), and this feast is included in admission to the con, IF you pre-register!

We are happy to welcome back the Celtic musical stylings of Mondragon (http://www.mondragonmusic.com), and we are phenomenally excited to present the eerie pirate/gypsy/zombie folk airs of that deliciously devilish troupe of undead, The Widow's Bane (http://www.myspace.com/widowsbane)!! And tis year, we are VERY happy to announce that none other than Bilgemunky himself (www.bilgemunky.com) is coming out all the way from Wisconsin to DJ with his gigantic pirate music collection, and to serve as our "pirate guest of honor!"

During the day we will be presenting all manner of games, activities, contests, and classes, including a range of kid-friendly activities for the powder-monkeys! We'll be running a day-long dice tournament, a chantey-sing, panels on swordplay, costuming, pirate history, and MUCH more!

And watch out, because in the early evening the party begins, with the con's transformation into the UNDEAD Buccaneer Bash! That's right folks, the Aztec gold will have a hold on us all as the night progresses, and the zombies, ghouls, and fiends come out to play! Come in your best undead pirate attire, or just your best pirate attire! Or if it comes down to it, just come in your civvies! And remember, you don't have to be a hard-core pirate enthusiast to enjoy this, the best Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration in the state! So tell your friends! Er... your OTHER friends! ;)

Admission is $30 at the door, but only $25 if you pre-register now! Also, BrethrenCon 2010 t-shirts are ONLY available through pre-registration. And once again, the feast is also ONLY available for pre-registration, and is included in admission! Furthermore, one dollar from every pre-registration for BrethrenCon 2010 will be donated to the Greater New Orleans Foundation (http://www.gnof.org/), who are helping in the Gulf Coast cleanup efforts, as well as renewing the historic Pirate haven of New Orleans for future generations! You can also choose to donate a larger amount through paypal, if you wish, when you sign up for the con.  And finally, the first 100 pre-registrations will be entered into a drawing to be held at the con for a pair of non-firing replica flintlock pistols! More info on the pre-registration page: http://www.brethrencon.com/index.php?page=tickets

We really need to get a lot of pre-registrations to make this con happen, and we need them soon, so pre-register now! And keep a weather eye on the horizon for more news, announcements, and updates!

To pre-register, and for more information, visit http://www.brethrencon.com!

See you at the con!

P.S.
Many people have asked me why we're putting on a Pirate convention in Colorado. And while I don't think this really needs explaining to all you scoundrels, I figure I'll put it out there: Just because we're landlocked doesn't mean we can't party like pirates! Indeed, I believe our aquatically challenged location to be an advantage. Why? It's simple: neutral ground. You cannot get farther away from the ocean than Denver, Colorado (well, except maybe for Kansas. But seriously, who wants to go to Kansas?). Being so far inland, Denver is the ideal location for pirate brethren from all 7 seas to come together on equal footing! Our goal for this con is to make it THE major meeting place for pirates from around the nation! Help us make this con into something truly extraordinary, and show everyone that Colorado has Piratitude!

...Speaking of Kansas, does anyone know how we might go about getting some of the very active Kansas City pirate-folk to migrate out here for the weekend?  I know it's in the middle of their faire run, but many of them are not tied to the renaissance festival, and I think they'd have a blast, as well as being welcome additions to our Brethren of the Plains!  And like I said, who wants to be in Kansas anyway?  Colorado is the place to be!  :P

And another thing: We need volunteers!  If you're interested in volunteering for the con in ANY WAY, please send us an email at swabs@sunkenbones.com!

Also, we are currently looking for people who would like to host panels, classes, or activities during the day.  We are looking for things like panels on stage fighting, pirate history, costuming, pirate literature, black powder safety, the anatomy of a pirate vessel, tattoos and their significance, what pirates ate, and all sorts of other stuff!  That's just what I came up with off the top of me head!

We would also love activities like boffer fighting, pirate table-top games (like different card and dice games, board games like "Dread Pirate," the Pirates Constructable Strategy Game, etc.  In fact, we've got a whole room devoted to gaming), treasure hunts, competitions of all kinds, etc.

If you're interested in hosting a panel or activity, let our panel coordinator know at panels@sunkenbones.com!

They seem to be a rather elite lot, I've noticed.

CapnJack

Some of them, but not all.  There is a large body of "reenactor" types, who tend to have a strictly historical outlook on piracy, and they have a tendency to sometimes create an "historical elite" on the boards, it seems.  But there are still plenty of others on there who just want to have fun.  Like I said, I think it's high time for thread-bumping...

Historical Accuracy? Pirates?
com'on...everyone knows that pirates didn't really exist. Those are children's tales.
Just like Robinhood, Joan of Arc, Johnny Appleseed, Druids, Leif Erikson, etc.
Pirates.

I know right?  Ludicrous.  I'm pretty sure the moon landing was faked too.

I think this tends to happen whenever there is historical re-enactment and a superiority complex involved...my dad used to be a Revolutionary War reenactor and he's told me numerous times about the people who looked down their noses at those who didn't hand sew their uniforms or sleep under blankets in the open air in November in Rhode Island...my dad was the one who said "screw that, I'm not freezing to death to portray the life of someone who died 200 years ago!"  So I imagine it happens in all circles....

But seriously, pirates?  Total Disney fantasy.
