Hello Ladies, I need your advice on the fabric at wal mart. I've been looking at a couple of pieces there which I think would make beautiful garb. Problen is the fabric content is not listed. This would be only used as an underskirt not the main part of garb. I haven't bought it yet but have been tempted to. I want to thank the ladies on here for posting their opinions and experience in fabric choices.

Thank you.

What's the regular price per yard?

If I remember right $6.99.

See if you can get a 1/8 of a yard on it and put it on hold (or just go outside the store with your lighter to do this!).  Burn a small corner of the strip of fabric you have.

See how it burns.

If it's a blend with any natural fibers, you'll most likely be okay.  Remember, ALWAYS wear a cotton or linen chemise beneath your bodice.  Your chemise should be long enough to cover your legs down to right below your knees, at least.   If you are planning on wearing this as a skirt over a farthingale, it shouldn't matter too much what the fabric content is...as long as you stay out of direct sunlight.

I would ask for a swatch.  They should oblige.

Walmart is the only place in Stephenville (where I went to HS) to buy fabric. I've used a decent amount of the things they have...I've never noticed a major difference in price or quality. Usually if I find something similar to what I've found somewhere else its about the same, occasionally it will be like a dollar cheaper and about a dollar cheaper in quality too. The fabric at walmart isn't made by walmart. Its made by a normal fabric company and is bought by walmart, which is kind of why some Walmarts have fabric and some don't. Anything walmart makes itself is available at every walmart.
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.

What type of underskirt are you making? If it's to be an Elizabethan forepart and if the fabric proves to be too synthetic for a fullskirt, you could make the majority of the skirt in a cotton and sew the prettier fabric into the front where it will show.

That's was my thought too. I will be going to that wal mart soon. ( My wal Mart dosen't have fabric anymore ) Will get a swatch and do the burn test on it. Thanks you ladies for your help.   ;D

Although I am not a lady, I will respond as well!  I have purchased fabric many times at WalMart, and have never been let down yet!  Mine stopped selling fabric right before Christmas 2009, and I did purchase quite a lot of the rough hewn looking unbleached cotton for shirts and linings.  I also bought a number of yards of different material that I am just using right now for a family's garb for this season's MN Ren Faire.

Get the stuff from WalMart if the price is right!
