I typically use 55 yrds for a hat.  That is ~7".  I do not put a band on, I like the curled look.  It fits me with room to spare.  I would make one for yourself and then use that to see if it will fit your man.  I would make one slightly longer for my guy.  Also I have come to prefer the double thickness, so that would be 110 yrds!

Thank you, ladies, for your help.  I picked up the pack of 4 round looms last week and have been hat crazy since!  I have made 2 adorable little hats (one with brim, one with the curl on the bottom and a pompom on top ;D) for my nephew's first birthday coming up, plus a little matching scarf, 2 hats for myself (again, one curled, one brimmed), a matching scarf and hat set for my son (hat brimmed...I bought...what I suspect to be a knifty knitter...hat last year at the festival for my son that is curled, so I decided to make him one that has the brim) and now I'm working on another one for myself!  I will be making one for my husband once he picks out a black/grey combo he likes...he is very particular on the color...  I actually like the ones I have made more than the one I bought my son last year.  I have been doubling my rounds on the loom so the knit is tighter and thicker, and just all around looks nicer, I think.  The purchased hat was just done with single loops, and I can see how much looser it is.  Besides, now I can really get creative with the colors I want.  I've put a couple little knitted flowers onto the first hat I made for myself.  I'm addicted to doing the hats.

They're lots of fun, aren't they, and they go quite fast when you get the rhythm going!  Can't wait to see some pics of your work!
