Simple Sleeve Pattern

I need a nice, simple pattern for tie on sleeves for my Moresca Max II bodice.   I was thinking to make these out of a pin tuck material (to be embellished later) that I also want to make into a matching petticoat forepart.  The sleeves will be pinned or tied up under the paned-look epaulets.  I can figure out if I want to include slashes after I see the finished product.
Hopefully the resulting additions will make my newest Moresca ensemble a little bit closer to period looking.
The Max is soooo comfortable and supports my back wonderfully.  I'm adding bodice jewelry this year too.
  Thanks!

Have you shown us your Max yet? :D

The Margo Anderson Elizabethan Lady's pattern has (IIRC) five tie-on sleeve options. (ETA--I was wrong--it's actually EIGHT!!)

This tutorial has a section on sleeves, but I don't know anything else about it.

The OOP Simplicity 3912/Ever After dress has two-piece tie-on sleeves (which are probably not what you're looking for, but I'm posting them anyway. I'm planning to use this for the sleeves in Promenade.).

But really, a sleeve is sort of a sleeve. :)  If you have, say, a coat or a jacket pattern that fits you well (I say jacket because you'll want a little ease to be able to slip it over your chemise, etc), you can adapt it for tying on. You'll just want to be sure that there's no puff to the sleeve head and that there's not too much easing (which will give you more material at the shoulder than you want). Obviously, do a mockup first. And I would line mine with another coordinating fashion fabric so that they could be reversible.

FUN PROJECT!!

I never thought of that!  The skirt should be easy; just a basic gored skirt pattern (there is one here).
I have a renshirt pattern that I love that even has a option for ruffled cuffs ^_^.  Nice full sleeves.   I should be able to cut a right and left one and just line it with a plain fabric, though come to think of it, I could probably make these reversible...two for the work of one.
Thanks for the hint about the shoulder easements, I was going to ask about that. The Renshirt is gathered at the shoulders, but not very much.  The main gather is at the wrist.
How hard is it to slash the sleeves?  Just make a split down the middle and fasten with jewels?
I have a pic of myself wearing the Max II at Riverssance in Sioux falls on my face book page.
Posting pics here is a challenge for me, but I'll see if I can't save that pic to Photobucket.  Seems to be the only reliable way I can get photos to transfer.

The picture on the front of the pattern envelope of the lady in red....Those are the sleeves I'll be trying for.  They will pin up under the paned epaulets on the Max II nicely,  in fact the bodice on the pattern is very similar to the Max II. Long waist and tabs are very nearly the same.

Hmmm... I wonder if a typical renwear shirt/chemise pattern won't have sleeves that are too full. You don't want anything that you have to gather into the armscye or cuff. And those particular MA sleeves have a curve to them that's a little different than you'd see in an ordinary sleeve (here I am, backpedaling from my previous post!). I'll poke around a bit and see if I can find more information...

Ok, I'm back with a bit more.

Naergillian (the costumer with those fab pix of the Phoenix gown from "Elizabeth R") has a picture of the silhouette of that curved sleeve on her website:

And more information about them here.

I think that armed with your blouse pattern and that picture, you could probably figure out some pleasing proportions for a sleeve you drafted yourself. Again, my same cautions apply: no ease in the sleeve head or gathering at the wrist. And this site has some good instructions for the measurements you'll want to keep in mind (like what happens when you bend your elbow).

You can totally do this.

One more thing!  Do you have Tudor Tailor? There are gads of sleeve patterns in there, and the technical drawing on page 125 shows the type of sleeves you're looking for (although, as is typical for that book, I can't tell if the accompanying pattern is for those sleeves or another gown).

I'll look over on Amazon for that book...

Catherine, if you click the one that says "here," it will take you to the full page, and the first picture on that page is the sleeve silhouette.

Rowen, your bodice is gorgeous!! Can't wait to see the new finished ensemble.

Click on the link to the main site, right under the first link. Or here: http://www.naergilien.info/Valoisslashed/slashedsleeves.htm

The first picture on the page is the sleeve pattern. I think Naergilien has made direct links to images invalid to prevent hotlinking of pictures.
