Forepart/underskirt question

And it's period!  They were often just basted in place for a day's wearing.

I back my foreparts with heavy canvas. So that I can pearl and so that my hoop rings will not show through there is nothing worse that working for months or more on a gown and having people mention all they can see is your hoop!!

I have never had an issue with my hoop dropping back because of the wieght of my forepart, could be because I cartridge pleat the over skirts so they have a good amount of fabric in them.

I'm definitely not worried about the hoop showing through, so I think the cotton sateen that I bought to back it with should be fine. In the pic up there, it doesn't show even without the backing, and I'm not wearing the petticoat I sometimes wear over my hoop. But I have a ruffled farthingale (the one from Moresca), and it creates a wonderfully smooth line.

I use felt for the lining of the forepart and cotton broadcloth for the rest of the underskirt that doesn't show
