I am sorely tempted to trade some sewing work for a friend of mine who is a set carpenter to make me a collasable table that is bar height for me to work on.

I've spent the past month sewing at my dinning room table. (The DH was saying he wasn't seeing me much with me being in my office all the time, so I moved there so he can at least see me once in a while.)  I haven't really had back problems sitting at that height of table, or with straight back chairs. I have to say the most pain I get is the tugging and pulling when working with heavy garments.  Hurts after 4 hours of tugging and lugging.
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

Check something like craigslist for office chairs that are being surplussed out. Most of those are designed to be ergonomically correct for sitting long stretches.
I've bought 2 for less than $20.
