Sir Dougie Zerts

(Here's a new interactive story I've come up with.  I hope all of you get involved!)

Sir John of Gentry was riding in the countryside, looking for adventure.  He had just had a light lunch and a couple pints of ale at a pub in a small town.  The ale and the venison were good, but the townspeople were not very friendly.
Less than a mile outside of the town, the path led to a small pond.  A maiden was lying in the water.  She wore a black dress.
At first, he thought she was just cooling off, it being a hot day.  But as he looked at her he saw that she was tied down in the water!  Was this some sort of punishment for a bad deed?
As he approached her, she spoke to him:
"Please sir, can you get me out of here?"

SirMichael

Sir John, stopped his steed and dismounted. He then walked over to the edge of the water carefully watching all around. When he was next to the waters edge he said why Maiden in black, are thee tied up in the water? This is very courious indeed.

"Sire," she replied, "I came home very early this morning, overcome with wine.  My dearest sister got married, yesterday, and I confess that I drank too much, during the reception.  When I came in, the town elders grabbed me and tied me here as 'punishment' for my drunkenness--in my best dress, no less!"
He nodded.  "All right, I'll get you out."
"Oh, thank you, kind sire!"
Hi sat down and quickly took off his boots.  Then he waded in the water and began untying the ropes.
It was at that moment that three men came on the scene.  He recognized at least one of them from the tavern.
"Leave this wench alone!," one of them commanded.

SirMichael

Sir John finished untying her and then moved out of the water back to near his trusty steed. He then shouted back to the one commonier "What right do you have to tell a Knight anything in that tone...I am helping this poor lass who was tied in the water. Just then a fryer in brown robes came from out of the forest nearby. As he walked toward Sir John and the lass, the men started to move a bit further away. As they did, they shouted you will hear from us again Knight. Sir John noticed the lass was shaking from the cold water, he grabbed his cloak from the mighty steed and wrapped the lass in it to warm. The monk approaced closer.

"This lady is being punished," he said.
"For drinking too much wine at a wedding?  That is something we've all done!," answered Sir John.
"Is that what she said?  There is more to her story than just that."
He looked at the wet maiden.  "'Tis true?"
Suddenly, she gave the cloak back to Sir John.  Then she jumped into the water and swam to the middle of the lake!  She was a good swimmer, and she effortlessly bobbed in the water.
Sir John smiled.  He threw his cloak on the bank near to his horse and he dove in the water.  Soon, he was by her side.

SirMichael

Now that Sir John had swam out to the lass, he started to wade in the water. Alrighty now, enough is enough young Lady. What do these town people and the Monk know that I do not? You told me the Elders punished you for being drunk. Now the Monk has implied there is more and then you run off and swim out here. I think I deserve an answer....I'm waiting.

Looking back to shore the Monk and the comminers were now standing there in amasement looking at Sir John wading in the water by the Lass. He didn't even take off his chain mail hood.

Slowly the Lass began to speak. Oh kind Knight, I guess you do deserve to hear my story. It all started last night at the Wedding of my Sister Emma.

"As I said, I had too much wine to drink.  I stumbled home, last night, and I thought I made it into my own house.  But, I somehow walked into the abode of the. . . Oh, I cannot bear to admit it!"
"'Tis all right, my lady."
"Thank you.  I somehow stumbled into the abode of. . . one of the monks!"
"The one by the shore?"
"Yes, Sire."
"And that's why they tied you into the water?"
"Yes, Sire."
Sir John roared with laughter.

Merlin

"Why do you laugh at me, my Lord?" she asked.

"Tis not you I am laughing... did you not get a good luck at that monk?"

"No...I shielded my eyes. Why? Who is he?"

My Lass, I have crusaded around the world for many years. I have seen and heard of many bad things but this is not one of them. I am getting a bit cold and tired, so I think we both need to swim back ashore and I will deal with this Monk directly. enough is enough.

Both Sir John and the Lass swim back to shore. As Sir John gets out of the water, the Lass stands with her feet still in the water. Sir John shouts out "My dear Frier and Warrior Monk...I need a word with thee"

Warrior Monk, I seem to know thee from somewhere. I am Sir John of Gentry. I had served in the Crusades under King Richard, the Lion Heart as his Knight Commander of Calvery. I am on my way home to Avaloch when I ran across this Lass tied in the water. We need to speak more on this matter. I am sure that there was just cause for your actions with her, but now enough is enough. On my honor she has told me how very sorry she was for her misgivings with you last night. As one who holds the Lord God in his heart and as a fellow warrior of God, can you find it in your heart to forgive her as a favor to me? After all "Vincit omnia veritas...Dues Lo Vult" ? King Richard told me many times Be loyal of hands and mouth and serve everyone as best you can. I did not mean to show you disrespect in freeing the Lass, I was only helping her. Let's go get an Ale and be done with this matter. Turning Sir John also shouted to the Lass will you get out of the water for the final time!

Unfortunately, Sir John's speech did not placate the monk.
"This wench is a daemoness from Hell, and she has come to seduce me!  I have live quietly here for the last ten years praying and giving service to God.  Last night, she came into my bed to try and turn me to Satan.  She must be baptized of her sins!"

SirMichael

ahhhh I see, said Sir John. Monk, I will try to solve this one last time.

Lass are thee willing to be baptized to satisfy the Warrior Monk? I can see no other way to stop you from being cast into the pond again otherwise.

Suddenly, bubbles started apearing in the water and headed for the shore. The Warrior Monk said see...I told you Knight that this Wench is a daemon. Here is yet another sign.

Sir John stared at the maiden.  She seemed as bewildered as he was.  "No! I swear on the Holy Bible I had nothing to do with this!," she said.
Suddenly, Sir John nodded his head.  "I now remember who you are," he said.  "You are the magician Boothwayn.  And I would bet my last copper penny that you caused this 'miracle!'"
His accusation clearly disturbed the "monk."  "No!  Er. . . you are clearly mistaken!"
"Roll down your right-hand sleeve, Boothwayn.  Let us see the snake tattoo on your arm!  And leave this poor maiden alone!"
Meanwhile, the water in the lake changed to the consistency of. . . ale!

Merlin

And from the lake of ale appeared a man. It wasn't an ordinary man. Slowly the man rose from the libation and began to hover closer to the shores. It was.... MERLIN!

"Merlin... what business do you have here?" cried the monk. "This is no concern of yours. Your guard is with the King!"

Merlin began to take full form and settled next to the monk.

"My business is your business good friar. Have you forgotten our deal?"

"I. . . er. . . I have been busy, recently," he stammered.
"THOU ART A FOOL!," he shouted.  Then he turned to the knight and the wet maiden.  "You may leave, Sir John.  And you too, Iona.  I am sorry you got involved in this whole affair."
They were a little surprised tha Merlin knew their names.  They were about to walk away when he spoke again:
"Baptize yourself in the lake, Boothwayn!"

SirMichael

Well Sir John, picked up his cloak from the ground and put it on the lass's shoulder. AAhhh my  Lady Iona, I now know your name. You have never told me it before. I am going to escort mi Lady into town. God only knows what else lies in these woods.

As Sir John and Lady Iona walked away, Sir John waved good-bye to Merlin. Oh Merlin, please send my best wishes to King Authur when you see and Thanks for all your help. Merlin just tilted his head and poof in a cloud of smoke, he was gone.

Lady Iona then looked at Sir John and Thanked him for all his help. She then said "You truely are a most wounderous Knight"

Just then Sir John had an idea, I'm hungry, where can we find suitable food in this village?

"With our clothes wet?"
He laughed.  "Oh, I almost forgot about that!"
"Why don't we stop at my house, where we can change clothes."
"An excellent idea.  Lead on, my lady."

Merlin

As they began to walk away, the Lady of the Lake appeared and called to Merlin.

"Merlin.... you must deliver this sword to King Arthur"

Merlin looked puzzled... "But Lady... King Arthur wields Excalibur already"

"His anger has caused him to break the sword. The Kingdom is without a King and in great peril", said the Lady, "Now quick! Take the sword to Arthur at once!"

#17
Sir John and Lady Iona walked to her cottage in the village. As Sir John was grabbing some dry clothes from his steed, he noticed that the red jewel in the hilt of his borad sword had begun to glow red. Oh no he thought, what does this mean. It has never done this before.

Lady Iona had come out from her cottage to see what was taking Sir John so long. She too saw the sword glowing. Sir John she said...why does thee sword glow as such?

Sir John looked toward lady Iona and was about to speak when a large cloud of red smoke appeared. Out of the smoke appeared Merlin.

Merlin then walked over to Sir John and stated, Knight I am in need of your services for a very special quest. You have proven yourself worthy of this task in your dealings with Boothwayn. You said you are from realm of Avaloch. I have reason to believe King Author is there but  I have no gold or silver to offer thee for your services Knight.

Sir John started telling Merlin that he would help him with or without gold or silver. There are things more powerfull than money. Just then Merlin saw the sword glowing red. He stopped Sir John and asked wait, Knight thee sword you carry, where did you get it? Sir John said it was passed on from father to son for many years.

Merlin then said we must hurry then. Lady Iona was very puzzled and said what does this all mean. Merlin looked over to her and said well come along, don't dilly we may need your help as well. Better pack some food for a long trip.

They set off immediately after Iona had briefly withdrawn into her cottage to find a dry gown, rudimentary supplies, and the old lute which she never traveled without. She rode behind Sir John, who had the stronger steed, while Merlin followed on a swift mule he had procured as they waited for Iona. They made good pace and had ridden some hours, when  a dreadful scent of burning hair reached their nostrils, and Sir John's steed screamed in pain and reared into the air, casting Sir John and lady Iona to the ground. Upon examination, they found that as the stone on Sir John's sword had continued to glow it had gathered heat and had just seared through its scabbard and burned the poor beast. It seemed that the longer it smoldered the more quickly it gained heat, and by the time Sir John had manged to calm the beast, remove the weapon and thrust it to the ground the heat was so intense that the party could not get near it without pain. It had already incinerated nearby vegetation and burned the moisture from the soil beneath it in a cloud of steam; the cloud of heat was spreading at supernatural speed, and they feared it was only a matter of time before the surrounding brush was set alight. Then Merlin cried out "Lady Iona! Make music before your lute is turned to ashes!" Lady Iona began gamely to strum and sing. Her voice was sweet and surprisingly deep, her playing skilled. However, the true wonder was the affect of her song; before Sir John's widening eyes, the sword cooled as she played. By the time she finished the tune, the heat was gone and the stone's fire gone. However, her melody had not been so handy in repairing Sir John's horse and steed; the former being quite blackened by heat, the latter having a raw burn upon it's flank and so being unable to be saddled. "Well," sighed Sir John, "My eyes have witnessed a miracle, but it seems that, like a pilgrim, I shall have to earn it with walking."
