My daughter's rat, Io, has just learned in the last 24 hours, how to open her cage door... so now we have to wire the door shut and hope she can't chew through the wire twist ties.  If she does then we're going to have to put the little metal lock from Scally's diary on the cage...  :D

Oh, and she doesn't actually go anywhere... she just climbs up on top of the cage, or jumps over to the bed, and hangs out... waiting to be noticed.  I wonder if she thinks it a trick that she should be rewarded for?

When I was in high school, we had a cockatiel and a hamster, whose cages were housed right next to each other. Despite the twist tie we put on the cage, after the hamster learned to open it, the bird would occasionally bite through the tie, and open the cage, and we would find him inside the hamster cage eating the hamster food, and the hamster would jump the four feet off the cabinet to the ground, and would hide out in a nest she made in the towels stored in the cabinet.

Rani, rats are great! They are so smart. I dont have any now but we always had a couple when my kids were growing up. My favorite were the Siamese looking ones...
LOL, Merlin, yeah, a dachshund getting the "zoomies" is safer as opposed to larger dogs! The bigger one doesnt often but when he DOES, its best to just flatten yourself up again the wall!

She's a "fancy" rat, and she's actually a rescue.  She's extremely smart, and she managed to escape from the previous little horror who bought her and survive outside with feral cats for well over a week before she finally came to our door and begged me to pick her up.  I could tell she was scared to go back to people, but I guess after hiding out from the cat-pack she figured she should chance it.  Out of 32 apartments, ours was the one she chose, and we've all been happy together ever since.  She's the sweetest thing, and just as gentle as can be.  There was no way we were letting her go back to the little pet-killer she escaped from, either...

Thats awful, I sure wouldnt send her back to the brat either! I think it was fate that brought her to your door, things happen for a reason. :)
