Where do you hang your hat?

I've never been much of a hat wearer. After my first season at faire though, I do see the advantage of portable shade. So my question is this: when it's not perched on top of your head, what do you do with your hat? I can just see taking it off, setting it down, and forgetting about it.

I think I just never take mine off.  My hair would look awful, and I wouldn't want to leave it somewhere, so it just stays on my head.  You forget its there after a while.

LadyFae

I've only taken mine off to try on other hats OR once at a show when I knew that there was a very short woman sitting behind me.  I took it off to be polite and left it in my lap for the duration of the show.  =)

What they said.  You could tie it around your head with a ribbon and let it hang down your back, but I find a ribbon around my neck/chin more annoying than just wearing a hat all day.

That said, I always carry kilt pins in my pouch/basket, and on days when I've bought new hats, I'll pin either the new or the old hat to my belt (here is another good time to have ribbons handy, too).

I agree that a ribbon around my neck would be very annoying (plus I think MG would yank on it!). I was thinking along the lines of attaching it to my belt somehow via mug strap or something. Wonder how pinning a ribbon "hook" would work?

Whew!  I had another kilt pin in mind! :o

My hats are clipped to my hair or my snood. Taking it off is not really an option.

Or....

Pretty sure you know some peoples who just happen to work at booths on the grounds that would be happy to hang your hat up for you!  ;)

said peoples may put the hat on and dance around, but hey that's what you get for leaving your hat!  :-*

Mine stays perched on my head all day. At home it has a plastic bucket that it can bond with the other hats in so they don't get lonely.  :P

This is just a silly question in general.  I mean really... why would I want to take off my fabulous hat?   ;)

Ms Trish, my dear, we'll find a viable solution for you.   :D
Nothing clever to say here.  Not enough caffine yet.

Lady Rebecca

I take mine off during shows if I have people sitting behind me and put it in my lap, and I take it off for things like the Maypole dances, in which case it sits in my basket.

McGuinness

What kind of hat is it? I'd think the answer would change depending if it was a big straw hat or noble's tall hat or fabric flat cap or any others.

Ms Trish

I never really thought about it, but it resembles a Stetson without the dimple thing on top. (See how adept I am at hat lingo? You should hear me try to talk about the parts of our garb! LOL)

I have a hat like that and I don't know what to call it either.  I also wear a tri-corn and a tall hat.  In all cases they stay on my head.  I'm afraid I (or someone else) will spill drink on them or they will somehow get faire filth on them.  I don't take them off until I get into the car to drive.  And I agree with MG...why would I remove my hat??  It's an important part of my garb and I feel naked without it.

Now with me i really never remove my big pirate hat unless i'm seeing a show and i know its blocking the view of people behind me. So since i am sitting down i put the hat on my knee.

McGuinness

With a stiff hat like that, I'd say letting it fall behind your head would be the most common and easiest. I did it one year on cast when I had a big straw hat and pinned the strings to the front center of my bodice. I've seen pics of people pinning it to their shoulders too to keep it off their neck.

Muffin, I would be tempted to leave my hat with you just for the photo opportunity! :)

Lady Renee Buchanan

Most of my hats I keep on my head all day.

However, I do have a large straw hat.  It has very long ribbons to tie under the chin, which I don't do.   I slide the ribbons under my bodice shoulder straps in the back and tie it in a bow (double bow so it doesn't come undone).  I put it from the outside in, so it goes across my back.  Then the hat hangs down.

The ribbons are long enough that I can just reach back and put it on my head without untying it, and the ribbons don't pull on the bodice while the hat is on your head.  With this length, it is short enough that when I take it off, it doesn't hang down around my bum.

You may have to lengthen/shorten the ribbons a few times until you find the length that works for you, but once you have it, you can't feel the ribbons whether the hat is on your head, or hanging down your back, and it is very comfortable.

Thanks for the ideas! I think I'll have to try the ribbon and/or pin thing. I just know there's no way I'm going to keep it on my head all day. :)

Ms Trish

Thanks again for the hat ideas. I think I'll try pinning the cord to my bodice as suggested. BUT!! I had my first day at faire and the hat stayed on my head almost ALL day long! Still not sure how that happened!

See Silly Gir, it isn't that hard to wear it all dayl!  =)  The only reason mine came off that day was when I hugged DB and our hats knocked together.  His was bigger, mine lost the battle and hit the ground!  LOL!
