Sir. Kindle

Hello again,

I recently purchased a spyglass and a long Churchwarden style pipe for my pirate outfit. I now need help finding a place for them on my outfit and a way to hold them. I like items like these to be visible, so I'd rather not keep them stored in a pouch, or anything like that. I also don't wish to attach anything permanently to my baldric, as I use the baldric for multiple outfits, which aren't all pirate related (I also have a brand new baldric, which is being made for me as I type this and it's going to be waaay to fancy to want to place any attachments to it).

Here's a picture of the pipe. It measures about 15" in length (yes, it is over the top, but my whole outfit is designed to be over the top, so...;-p)

Here is a picture of me, with the spyglass tucked into my belt. As you can see, it doesn't sit perfectly, which makes me worry that it will fall out someday and break on the ground.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sir. Kindle

Do you plan on using the pipe or just have it by your side as a prop?  Because if you don't want to use it, tying some leather cord -decoratively- to the stem until it's tight and then tie that cord to your belt.

Ahoy their Cap'n;
First off I be liking your attire my friend.  I once saw a picture of a fellow pirate with a long pipe being held by two small slits in his tricorn hat.  I be thinking that was a smart idea meself, just me two cents mind you.

Thank you for responding. While I'm not actually going to light the pipe, I would like to have access to it, if only to add another dimension to my character. Now that I have a spyglass, I'll occasionally pull it out and look around, just to seem more nautical, even though I'm not actually looking at anything. It also makes for good poses in pictures. I'd like to be able to do the same with the pipe.

Still, perhaps I could find a way of holding it with a leather cord, but have it easily removable, so that I can hold it when I'd like.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you also for responding Captain and thanks for the complement.

I too have seen this done, but usually with much smaller pipes. I haven't actually received the pipe yet, so I can't tell for sure (it's supposed to arrive tomorrow), but I fear that it might be too long for me to do this. I am toying with the hope that I can tuck it into the side of my hat, kind of like you'd tuck a feather plume in. I'll let you know if this works, once I get it.

Nevertheless, if I am able to tuck it in this way, which I'm afraid that the curve of the handle might prevent from happening, it won't be very visible, so...

I'll let you know if either of these ideas work, once it arrives.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Sir Kindle,

When i had my long pipe for my pirate i had it in two places one was my captain kid style hat which is why the pipe is no longer with me, it was ceramic and it fell out and broke. The other which alot like was in my baldric in the buckle, what i would do is pull out the strap going through the buckle and slid the pipe in.

I'm sorry to hear about your first pipe. This is always my fear when I add something to my outfit. I like to make sure that anything I add is as secure as possible before I'll wear it around...Sadly, as you've experienced (and I have as well), this doesn't always mean that things won't fall and break, despite your best efforts.

I love the idea of using the strap of the baldric to hold it! I will definitely give this a try, once the pipe arrives (and again, once I get my new baldric, which won't be until early to mid July).

Thank you!

Anyone have any suggestions for the spyglass? I've seen other pirates with a leather holster for theirs on their baldrics, but this is about the only way I've seen other pirates carry a spyglass around. I'm hoping someone might have another idea.

Can always take a thin leather strap and wear it cross body on your right hip, baldric style. (The spyglass ). Then when you want to spy the horizon you just slide it up to yer eye, Cap'n. ;)

Sorry for the quick response, but I must return to work and so I'm in a bit of a rush.

Great idea! I'll have to see if I can make, or have made something that will work like this. Thank you!

that picture looks like a Macqueen churchwarden. I have a similar one, and based on how long mine is, it should fit well along one side of the brim of your hat (working on a new pirate persona myself, and that's what I'm thinking about doing). Just add a couple of loops to your hat, and it should sit quite well.

As far as your spyglass goes, maybe you can go to Hobby Lobby and get a little bit of leather. Cut it so it wraps around the middle of your spyglass, punch some holes, and lace it tightly (and maybe tie the lacing around the spyglass itself for extra security). Then add a strip of leather for a lanyard and hang it around your neck.

Good luck!
(nice pirate garb, btw)

I'm not sure what vendors you have at your home faire, but most of the ones I've known could easily make a buckle down hanger much like those used for rapiers. Then you could have it secure on your belt, but not to difficult to get to and pose with.
(Great garb by the way)

I wish I had known the name of the pipe BEFORE I had purchased it from the site where I found it. Some of the other sites sell the same pipe, not only cheaper, but with the leather case included...figures.

Oh well, anyway, onto the response. I received it yesterday and immediately brought it to my hat. It won't fit on the side, or back of it. It's just too long and my sides curve too much to allow it to sit there snugly. However, I am able to place it inside the brim, like a plume, where it rests securely and even sticks out a little in the back, which adds nicely to the look of the hat. I'm going to try placing it on my baldric tomorrow, but I'm happy with the way it sits in my hat and will probably keep it this way.

As for my spyglass, that's not a bad idea. I'll have to check out my local hobby and arts & craft stores to see if they have anything that will work.

Thank you Drudonn

DonaCatalina; I have thought about having some type of leather holster made for it. I already know a couple leather workers that can probably make one for me. If I don't find anything that works at a local store, I'll probably end up having something made.

Thank you for responding.
