My aunt is a  more than decent seamstress, and she wants to recreate a specific dress. It was worn in European Song Contest in 1986 (I think) and looks like this:

It's a lavender dress (not as important) with a coat like overdress. Does anyone know of a commercial pattern (Simplicity, Vogue etc) looking similar to that overdress?

How is she at adapting existing patterns?  I think "similar" is probably the best I can do:

Vogue 2607: fitted formal 2 piece suit. She'd need to redraft the skirt pattern and combine it with the jacket, but the fitted jacket has a similar shape.

Vogue 1290: a long formal jacket

The jacket from Simplicity 5561 is shorter, but overall the ensemble has a similar silhouette.

I used a standard medieval style pattern for my ghawazee coat.  I made several adjustments (much shorter for one) but the fit was almost exactly like that.

That first pattern look very interesting. I think it can be frankensteined into the dress she wants.

Dinobabe, did you use a specific Medieval pattern? Or any you'd recommend?

I used Butterick 4827 but anything similar should work.

Ironically, as I went looking for the page (couldn't remember what brand I used) I found that Simplicity has come up with their own Ghawazee style pattern!  Simplicity 6171  Their pattern looks almost exactly like what I did with the medieval dress.  Hmpf. ::)

Ooh, Anea, look what I just found!

Butterick 4732

It's not as fitted as the original, but it also looks like it's a little big on the model (typical Big 4 ease  ::)), but it definitely captures the spirit and silhouette of the original!
