Wow!
I didn't mean to step on anyone's musical toes, but every generation thinks their music is the be all and end all.

The bowling alley I work at runs Rock n Bowl on Friday and Saturday nights and we run the music from a laptop at the counter.  Last weekend, I get yelled at by some 'tween for playing Journey! ("That's old people music!!") So to her, if it ain't Young Jeezey, Lil Wayne or T Pain then it ain't music.

I have a personal grudge against Nirvana for bringing an end to Hair Metal.

A friend of mine and one of his friends constantly rage back and forth about who's better: Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones.

No denying the Beatles contribution to music, just saying I liked Jeff Healey's version better.  Sorry if I offended anyone.

You don't like Nirvana!!!

*Anna reaches through the screen and socks Maelstrom*  ;D ;D

Capt Spleen-  Huzzah! We've got the whole band... Stu Sutcliffe anyone?
I do like Elton John's version of Lucy in the Sky...

Maelstrom- I have to admit I like the Jeff Healey version better too, though I've never heard it. Actually, I don't think I've ever heard Jeff Healey! I remember one time when I was a kid and I was walking home from school with my brand new Beatles album (Beatles '65) and some kid was offended that I liked the Beatles- so we got in a big fight and I kicked his football over a tall fence.  Come to think of it- I think his name was Jeff... Loved the Journey story.

Old people music:

When the lights go down in the city,
and the sun shines on the bay,
do I want to be there,
in my city,

oh oh ohohoh ohoh

So you said your lonely
well my friend I'm lonely too
I want to get back, to my city
by the bay, ohoh ohohoh ohoh

It's sad ohh,
there's been mornings
out of the world without you,
without your charm

ohohoh nah nah nah ohoh

When the lights go down in the city
and the sun shines on the bay
do I want to be there, in my city oh oh

ohoh ohohoh ohoh

When the lights go down in the city
and the sun shines on the bay
do I want to be there
in my city,

ohoh ohohohoh ohoh
mmmmhmhm ohoh ohohoh ohoh

Regarding 'Ohio'.
We are coming up on that time of year in a few weeks. Kind of a painful memory for me since I lived 45 minutes from Kent State and most of my grad class went there at that time. The stories they tell on my class website are chilling.

But I'll save that post for another time.

P. S. Stones or Zep? I don't know, tough choice. But no one moves like Mick Jagger--he's like watching smoke!
Show me your tan lines..and I'll show you mine!

I just want to be Layla.....

Personally, I don't see how you can directly compare Zeppelin and the Stones.  Yeah, they're both rock bands, but their influences and approaches were so different.

Maelstrom, tell your friends to argue over something else for a change.  Here's an idea-- Katy Perry vs. Lily Allen.   :D :D

Yeah, it's rare for me to say I don't like this or that band. I guess they all have their good contributions and their..not so good.

On the subject of Led Zepplin..always loved this odd little tune. For a friend:

Going to California.

Spent my days with a woman unkind,
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going to california with an aching in my heart.
Someone told me theres a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
Took my chances on a big jet plane,
Never let them tell you that theyre all the same.
The sea was red and the sky was grey,
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today.
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
As the children of the sun began to awake.
Seems that the wrath of the gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow;
I think I might be sinking.
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
Ill meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high.
To find a queen without a king;
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings.
La la la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin to find a woman whos never, never, never been born.
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself its not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.

Ok, lets fast forward this train, like, a million years...

Tool- Schism

I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing,
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesnt mean I dont desire to
Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication.

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
Finding beauty in the dissonance.

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
Ive done the the math enough to know the dangers of a second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication

Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion

Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers.

And I know the pieces fit.

Kids... sheesh!!  :D

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Ha, that's funny because my kids, ages 12 and 14, LOVE Journey, as do a lot of their friends.  They like lots of 70's and  80s music.  My husband has turned both kids into Rush fanatics. (Neil Peart is my son's drum hero.)  Just last night we were all enjoying a Genesis concert we found on Dish.

Our kids are very musical, both of them being in their school bands and marching band. They enjoy many different genres of music, the main exceptions being any type of rap, bluegrass, and gospel, and they'd listen to bluegrass before listening to any rap.(which I'm so thankful for.)  My daughter will gladly go from  My Chemical Romance, or From First to Last, and then sing along with Journey to "Don't Stop Believin." She even used to sing along in the car with me to The Corrs. I'm so happy that they enjoy a wide variety of music.

It's a Maynard kind of day...

Three LIbras- A Perfect Circle

Threw you the obvious and you flew
With it on your back, a name in your recollection,
Down among a million same.
Difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed
And passed over
When I've looked right through
See you naked and oblivious
And you
Don't
See
Me.

But I threw you the obvious
Just to see if there's more behind the
Eyes
Of a fallen angel,
The eyes
Of a tragedy.

Here I am expecting just a little bit
Too much from the wounded.
But I see
See through it all
See through
See you.

I threw you the obvious
To see
What occurs behind the
Eyes of a fallen angel,
Eyes of a tragedy.

Oh well.

Oh well.

Apparently nothing.

Apparently nothing at all

You don't see me.
You don't see me at all

Dennis Deyoung  from Styx  was on a talk show  this  morning  promoting a new CD  he  has  out. He played  several of  his old songs, and  now I can't get this one  out of  my  head.Always  was one of  my favorite  " Styx" songs,  this  and  "  Babe ".   He sounded excellent  by the  way.

" Come sail away "

Im sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
Ive got to be free, free to face the life thats ahead of me
On board, Im the captain, so climb aboard
Well search for tomorrow on every shore
And Ill try, oh lord, Ill try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But well try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

How can anyone argue about something as entirely subjective as music?!?  It's all about what one person likes versus what another doesn't... where's the right or wrong in that?

I listen to as much new stuff as I can find, plus classic rock, beat, hip-hop, world rhythm, classical, fun and/or hard-core rap, opera, old musicals, new musicals, old country heartbreak, 60's folk, 70's new wave, 80's punk, 90's metal, spoken word, ancient ballads and many, many others... but although I have my favorites, I don't try to convince anyone that one is better than any of the others.  I just listen to what I enjoy.  Personal opinion is not an indicator of quality, no matter what anyone would try to convince us of...

Really busy thread, today... cool!!!  Lovin' all these different tunes runnin' round in all of your heads.  ;D  I still can't get rid of the Butthole Surfers... they just won't leave me alone!!!  ::)  :D

A few weeks ago my son and I were in the car and "Come Sail Away" came on.  He wanted to change the station stating "this song is slow and boring".  After the song kicked into gear, he said "Is this still the same song?"  He liked it.

Ok, now Kansas just popped into my head...

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high

Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say

{Refrain

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know

On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say

{Refrain
No!

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
The center lights around your vanity
But surely heaven waits for you

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry (don't you cry no more)
