I'm new to this site so thanks in advance for any help. I have asked my mother in law to help me make a musketeer tabard and would like any advice on maybe patterns to use and materiel to use. As far as materiel I want it to be able to breath a little but I still want it to be a little heavy not like a cheap costume tabard thanks for your help!

My suggestion would be cotton velveteen for the outside layer.

For the lining I would suggest silk dupioni

These fabrics will breathe considerably better than poly/rayon velvet and poly/rayon lining.

Are there any good patterns to go from, or should we just play it by ear?

I know McCalls had a pattern a few years back if you *need* one but the overall pattern is very simple.

Cut the big (body) trapezoid on the fold and the two smaller trapezoids (sleeves) on the edge.

Although cotton velveteen is a good idea, cotton uncut corduroy (Joanns had some) is a bit cheaper.  You can also try wool.   You might want to also look into linen as a lining.  Just stay away from anything synthetic and you'll be okay.
