I'm not sure if this is the best place for this. I saw the area looking for work and it's brother forum, but this is really for those amazing sewers. I read all your threads all the time.

I can only do hems and buttons - therefore am not a sewer. I tried. I need a tulle underskirt - a full black one quite like the one under this one: (don't need the overskirt...I don't think) http://www.etsy.com/listing/90149685/dance-all-night-skirt-victorian-gothic

But I can't afford the over 100.00 price. Is this what I should expect for something of this magnitude? Perhaps I just have to wait and save up for it.

last year I was trying to see if I could scrounge up one, but I'm really tall, and even the white ones I found at goodwill were too short.

I apologize if this is in the wrong place!

Ok, I'm off for a few weeks and while I can find plenty to do with my time, i could just try to make this myself - I guess. LMAO. I may end up sewing myself...to myself.

BUT, if someone knows of a pattern, I can start with, tulle can hide a multitude of sins.

If someone is willing to help me figure out where to even start on this, I'd be really appreciative. I always wanted to sew, and if I mess this up - it won't ruin my garb. I have a sewing machine, two of them actually. One is more modern, but the other uses an antique foot petal (the whole darn thing is). But I remember sewing on it as a child with my grandma, so I know it still works (I occasionally use it to stitch a hem when I'm being lazy...heh).

I don't even know how much fabric I'll need in regards to tulle, and do you do an underskirt for an underskirt?

Oui.  *face slap* what have I gotten into????

Edit: Does anyon know a few books I can buy? I'm really good at self taught stuff, I'd rather pay someone to do it, lol, but  I think I need to start sewing my own clothes. Being 6'1" I'm sick of a simple poncho costing over 100.00 .... anyways, thank you for your help! (I did consult the beginners threads).

Have you checked eBay? I just searched for "tulle underskirt" and got some that are $25 or less before shipping. Also YouTube has a few videos on making them.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UudMhOYpEto
Hope this helps

Hallo, Lava--nice to see you back! I remember when you were working on this last year. (Don't you love those projects? ::) LOL!)

Ann has a great idea! For $25, you could get the *start* of an underskirt, and then you'd only have to apply the bottom ruffle to get it to the right length. And having the finished skirt to examine will help you figure out how all the layers go together, and you'd only have to make a small investment in $, energy, and *mental* energy to get the last bit in!

I will say that tulle can be kind of a fiddly, fussy fabric to work with, so if you keep that in mind going in, it won't be as frustrating. Also, my go-to place for sewing-specific questions that seem slightly outside the RF.com purview is PatternReview.com--and there are *lots* of helpful threads about tulle & petticoats (mainly because there are large bridal and vintage fora there!).

LOL! Yes, I gave up last year because it was way too near Halloween for me to try to scrap an already made skirt and try to...I dunno, Frankenstein it!

Thanks for HAVING me back! lol, even if I am talking about tulle - I know it isn't a favorite since it isn't HA.

I have those links both bookmarked.

Stasiakatt - that's a great idea, I really need one already started. I think I can add the tulle to it, even if it is...a bit not well done because I'm looking for bulk and if a hint shows - that's actually ok, and preferred.

I appreciate the video!!! I did Youtube and got some really complicated stuff - and on my connection, waiting twenty minutes for a video to find out I am in over my head was no fun.  So your link is loading and I really...truly appreciate it more than words can say!

I saw a TON of tea length tulle skirts of the right 'fluffiness' online, on ebay for way cheap.  They are just TOO short. I'm tall as is.  If I could figure out if tearing them a bit apart and layering two would work...I tried on one at a bridal store and if the waist is big enough, I can make it almost work...but I don't know if that is just too weird. And frankly, not sure where to go beyond the concept of that. If anything, i could probably buy two and cut to sew onto a base skirt (like the one you mentioned).  Just finding one of the BASE skirts for someone a bit over 6' has been a ... daunting task.

Is my bastardized version even plausible? I am decent hand sewing, but have never tried anything quite...this complicated. But perhaps *I* am making it too much so.

I did find last year a long tulle white skirt that almost would have worked, only the words "dying it" freaked me out and made me wonder if I'd end up wearing more dye than dying.

Anyways, think I could frankenstein two together for an underskirt?

I'll go look up more info.  I just really dont' want to spend the 150 plus that I linked in taht photo (THEN I read there is a hoop under there too!!!!!!!!!)

AH!

Ok, enough of my ramblings - thank you for your help. This project WILL be finished this year.

Now I know what you all are talking about when you have your ongoing projects - lol!!!  Perhaps I haven't quite even gotten past the start stage though...but still! It'll be worth it, I'm sure, in the end.

Hey Lava.... I am big into shortcut sewing.... if you haven't yet made a final decision, I have a couple of suggestions. Being tall myself, you can be assured that these will work for you!

I would make a VERY simple underskirt with tuile added onto a solid base. This will protect your legs from the scratchy tuile, and be easier in the long run. My simple underskirts start with a length of fabric about 3 meters long. You want fabric that is nice and wide - so you can use the width as your length. BEFORE you sew the "short" ends together, sew a hem onto one of the long ends of the skirt, and next you will add the tuile to the skirt. You can do this in several ways - personally I would take lengeths of tuile that are at least 3 meters long and stitch one side to the underskirt fabric. I would then take the other edge and pull it up and under, making a billowy wave, stitching that edge as well. (Nice straight seams!). About three layers of this should do you - for more "poof" simply make your lengths of tuile longer, and gather them before sewing them to the base layer. (I would use 3 meters for the layer closest to the waist, 5 for the middle, and 7 for the bottom layer) The bottom edge of the tuile can just have the top edge sewn on, with the bottom edge trailing down.

Once you have the tuile attached, sew the back seam (the two "short" ends of the base layer), use any excess tuile to hide the seam if you are worried, add a waist band (Or sew a channel for a ribbon waist), and you are done!

Other way I would do it would be adding tuile to an existing farthingale - I once posted instructions for a simple farthingale using a bedsheet, 2 rows of plastic hose, and several channels of rope....

Hope that helps!

To make floor length, add another tier to the bottom, and make the skirt lining circle longer.  You will need 24 widths for the new bottom tier.
