Hallo all! This year is my first time back to TRF since I was a wee lass, having done much traveling of the world and experiencing what the US and Europe have to offer in the way of Renaissance Festivals for the last twelve years. I can't even tell you how excited I am to be back, and sharing the experience with my husband and two children! Everyone dresses up but my husband, eight years and I still can't get him into garb, but he does enjoy the festivals and the shows.

So here's our plan: we're coming in from San Antonio for the Highland Fling, hoping to arrive Saturday morning with a family 4pack of tickets and head over to the campgrounds, set up, enjoy the fest and spend the night. Sunday we're planning on using the free Scout passes (both of my kids are Scouts) and two military tickets (my husband is in the Army) to enjoy the day Sunday, pack up and go home Sunday night.

I have a few questions though:

I've heard some dodgy things about the main camping area - is it really that scary, or should we relegate ourselves to family camping? The wee ones are 6 & 8, and are used to campgrounds and being outdoors, but I've just heard that it gets too crazy.

Is it considered 'safe' to leave your tent up and your stuff (clothes, food) in the car during the day while you're at the fest? I'd hate to come back to find it slashed or ruined in some way.

Is this a festival that has more of a familiar, everyone is welcome atmosphere at the campgrounds, or is this one of the cliquish ones? I know that some are friendly and you can wander site to site introducing yourself and meeting new people, but there are others where you're quite likely to be shunned for entering others' hallowed grounds.

And lastly, we love to meet new people and make friends, so if anyone else is planning on being out that weekend and wants to say hi, let me know!

Guess it depends on what you think of a crazy not having wee ones I might not be the best to say.  You can from time to time see some nudity around but its far and way from a nudist camp Yes there are drunks around but that can be said of any sporting even or public beach.  This season they have made a big effort to correct problems in the camp grounds.  I've never had problems with my tent now camper or car being broken into I've heard of problem but you are going to have some of that anytime you have several hundred people around.  Most of the major clans are fine with visitors at least those who don't bring drama.  Being Highland weekend the Scots from Scarby will be down we are often loud and have been known to drink a bit but are friendly so come by say Hello you can always ask for Beare depending on the hour I might even remember posting this.

As long as you don't mind some noise, main camping area is fine.  For us, the general rule is to have our son in bed by 9:30-10.  The craziness, if there is any, doesn't start until later in the night.  Your stuff should be fine, anything of value (and alcohol) lock in the vehicle.  For the most part, everyone is welcoming.

I agree, most of the craziness is later in the night so if the kiddos are in bed by 9-10 it should not be a problem if you don't mind noise.
One year we left a cooler out and it was stolen but that is the only problem i have ever had in several years of going and camping. If its locked in the car it won't be a problem and I have never had any problems with vandalizing.

In wandering camp to camp, I have always found people welcoming and friendly although as with any large event there are a couple camps that prefer their own company.

I will be out camping Highland fling with a group of friends about 6-7 at last count we don't have a particular camp however we love meeting new people so if you happen upon us we would all love to meet you guys! :)

My only recommendation would be stay away from the main fire pit.  In years past, the southern most part of the grounds was always the best area to camp in.  We've had no issues with theft or vandalism.

If you can, try to find a group to throw in with.  That is always my recommendation.

Have a great weekend.

On Sunday morning, be aware that most of the rides and games in Sherwood Forest area are discounted 2 for 1 from 9 am to 12 noon. If the little ones like such things, it will be easier on your budget!

Take time to play and interact with the performance company on the paths. They are there for your pleasure and play well with others! You can recognize them easily by the lapel button, white this year. Plus they are not a shy lot! LOL!

You will enjoy the TRF experience!
