Renfaire Radio Station

I have searched, searched, and searched some more and have not found a renaissance faire station online that embodies to ME what the faire is about. SO: I have decided I want to start up a Renny Radio station.  I ask you here: WHAT are some renaissance faire performance groups (preferably with cd's) that you enjoy?  I would profit absolutely zero from this and it would be amazing exposure for some of the groups we know and love to get exposure other places.  Thoughts?

Anymore, most, if not all, of the performers will have CDs available. First ones that jump into my head are Circa Paleo, Tartanic, Wine & Alchemy, Owain Phyfe, Sarah Mullen... you could also throw in some material by some of the comedy acts periodically.

Keep in mind that there may be some copyright issues involved. I do not know how that is monitored on the Internet, but do know that there have been issues in the past in this regard.  There may be no royalties on most of the music, as the music is going to be frequently in the public domain, but the performances are not. The common conception anymore seems to be that once it's in digital format, it's free to distribute as desired, and this is not the case.

There are a ton of companies that you pay for "blanket royalties".  You pay a fee and they take care of all the royalty stuff. You can also (if hosting dedicated)use them or file the Appropriate forms and pay royalty bills.

Live365 has renradio, which I have always thought had great faire music and listened to for years.  Unfortunately it is now a VIP station which means you have to pay to listen.

This one would be 100% free to listen to.  I'd profit nothing on it, and actually be spending money to do it.

I am going to have a combination (I should mention) of actual RenFaire bands and of bigger groups performing songs you hear at faire (IE: Great Big Sea - Lukey's Boat).

How about groups that do period music like the Canadian Brass and The Baltimore Consort? I would like to hear music used for court dancind and such as well as modern performers at Faires. Hope you can get it up and running!

Do you know what streaming format you are going to use?   Personally, I put my vote in for Shoutcast.  It's stable, been around for years, and runs on all devices.

As far as artists, I think a scheduled mix of styles would be good.  Pubsings, sea chantys, funny stuff in the morning to afternoon slot, and true renaissance performances evening to morning.  I, for one, would love to make my morning drive with Tartanic.

I saw Saxon Moon for the first time at Sherwood this year. Greatly enjoyed them, and I know they have CD's as I bought 2.

Kansas City's "Tullamore" would be a great group for the radio.  They play some lively Celtic music as well as some ballads.  "Wyndnwyre" from south Texas is a quality band as well.  So is "Istanpitta" from northern Texas.

Here are some of our favorites, in no special order.   Craig of Farrington, Jock Stewart, Molly and The Tinker (since split up, but great CDs), also Tinker has solo albums, Three Pints Gone, New Minstrel Revue, Empty Hats, Dan the Bard,, Tourdion,  Bounding Main,  Michael Quinn, Rambling Sailors, Cast in Bronze, Jim Hancock, Bedlam Bards.

I'm probably forgetting several more that we enjoy.  If your station does go live, can you please put it on Iheartradio, for those people who don't live nearby, so we can listen, too.

Indeed.  On an interesting note: Tartanic played my local faire this weekend and I talked to Adrian and got his permission to put some Tartanic songs up for it.  I told him I figured they wouldn't mind but I figured since they were there I should get their blessing for it. 

I'm shopping around for what host I want to go with because I want to get an automated DJing tool so I can have bumpers, promotions, news, etc.  I've actually been brainstorming some segments for it.  Things like goings on at faires that are active, reviews, thoughts on things, etc.

I usually use Pandora, and have a Celtic Station as well as a Loreena McKennitt station.

But someting with smaller acts and labels on it would be fun! My favorite is still the Wicked Tinkers. I try to see them every year at Nor Cal, but sadly won't get to this year.

Also some great Dulcimer music would be great to hear more often!

You can't go wrong with Sandy Denny or Steeleye Span, the latter being rather folk-rockish.  Also Martin Carthy, The Watersons. I like The House Band, who you'll find on Pandora. I hated that they broke up. They were a great bunch of guys. They do a mix of traditional and more contemporary folk.
