I have some old brown work boots around the house that I think can be pressed into service as ren boots. They are brown cowboy boots that I think I can dye black and I have some oil tanned leather I can sew onto them to make them stove pipe boots or even pirate fold over boots.  Just wondering if anyone has done this and do you have any advice or opinion. I plan to glue them with rubber cement and then stitch the "gators or half chaps" to the boot.

Thank you.

Boot covers-$13.99.
I have seen some performers use them over biker and cowboy boots (non-pointy toe) especially when the going gets dirty, and they don't want to risk their $300.00 custom boots.

Why dye them?  Brown shoes are far more accurate than black.  Also, why not just make a spat to cover the boot?  Much easier, will end up looking nicer, and it can be used with a variety of foot wear.   All you need is some leather/cloth and elastic to go around the heel of the boot.   Also, I wouldn't use boots - I'd just use some old dress shoes you have lying around.  Honestly, in the Renaissance, the rarely wore boots.  Sandals, Mary Janes, and buckle shoes that look something like oxfords were all far more common.

Rowan, those are brilliant! Milord's dad has nice black riding boots he wears when they come down, but they are a *teensy* bit short. I think he would love those, and the price is great. (They are not hardcore Rennies.)

The very first time I saw them was on a performer dressed as a pirate; he was wearing black Nike's under them, because his role involved a bit of acrobatics.
Once the show was over-his changed into a regular pair of boots that closely resembled the covers so he could mingle.
