Hi!

I've been working on a saxon renaissance dress for awhile, inspired by the paintings made by Lucas Cranach, but I'm stuck, since I cannot find any fabric that looks like the gold fabric with the black vine/flower pattern in the pictures.

Does anyone know of a fabric that looks like the one in this picture?

The truth is we don't make that kind of fabric anymore - actually, we do - it's a gold brocade made with real gold- but I have yet to meet anyone that has enough money to buy even a yard of it.

What most people do is use a yellow or gold damask to mimic the look.  Similar to this

I've also seen some people take gold silk fabric and embroider over it with black silk thread.

I've had this in my stash for years.  It's a greenish/gold color but I'm sure it came in other options.  I got it at Hancock's.  You could have it but I only have about 1/4 yard (which is pretty useless for a dress!).  I always wanted to make a bodice out of it.

A VERY similar fabric - a screen printed silk with pomegranate pattern - was reproduced for the reconstruction of Queen Margareta's 14th century dress in Uppsala, Sweden:

The article writes the fabric should be available for sale, but I couldn't find it anywhere in their site apart from in the article (and hence I have no idea of prices). I assume you need to contact them for further info. Here's what they wrote:

"The design printed on cotton will be sold by the meter and as made up shopping bags with red design on both yellow and white ground. The printed silk will come in a gold/red and bluish gray/silver color. Silk scarves with pastel colored ground will also be printed with the design in white. The fabrics and the products will be presented the 12 of May and sold in the cathedral souvenir shop in Uppsala."
