Dwarf pattern-Simplicity 1552
« on: August 27, 2015, 09:11:35 AM »
Has anyone worked with this pattern?  Any warnings or opinions?  My son decided yesterday that he likes the Thorin inspired one so I will need to pick everything up soon.  Does it come in a youth/teen size?  He is 12 but small for his age.  I plan to make it a little big in hopes of using it a few years, but worry I will have to redraft even the extra small men's size.

I haven't specifically used that pattern - but with Simplicity, it's always a good idea to go down two sizes from what they say you need.  With this one, I'd be concerned about the lengths more than the widths for a young boy - luckily, that's an easy fix.

I am hoping the resizing won't be too bad!  Not sure when I will be able to make it to Joanns but hopefully soon.  October is sneaking up quickly!

No idea if any of this is helpful, but Simplicity's costume pattern designer, Andrea Schewe, blogs a lot about her creations. Here are the hits for this pattern number on her blog: http://www.andreaschewedesign.com/apps/search?q=1552 Looks like she has a couple posts about the construction of the models.

Sooo, an update!  I am finishing up the garb.  I bought the pattern about a week and a half before buying the fabric.  Gave me time to cut out all the pieces and shorten everything, to the sound of "Mom.....again...do you have to do this..."   ::)  Strangely, for the Thorin pattern, they want you to use the tunic fabric for the short coat sleeves and the coat fabric for the long tunic sleeves...  I understand what they were going for but if you want two separate working pieces of clothing, it won't look right...  Chances of my son keeping the fur-trimmed coat on all day in Texas weather is slim!  So, I switched that.  The patterns and instructions are pretty good, with a little bit of studying to make sure I'm doing it right.  It's taken about 2 days per piece.  All I have left on the main portion of the costume is hand-stitching the fur trim to the coat.  Then on to the belt and gauntlets...  We are planning to go to faire this Sunday so I had to make sure the important parts were done first.

Now time to clean up all the fur so my sewing space doesn't look like I've been skinning rabbits.... :P
