So, if knitting is period, but crochet is "knot" (sorry for that :p ).  Then, what is the history of Macrame besides being a fad of the 70's?  I realize the knots, such as half and square knots, used date way back, but what about creating other things besides nets and fringe, like home furnishings and wearable objects from these knots?  I'm guessing that would not be period, right?

I've read of a macrame hat, but have not seen pics.

Here's a pic of a lacy macrame 'hat'.  It's from a macrame book and a friend of mine made it to the point of the brim -- almost like a skull cap and used it for SCA events.  Everyone thought it was super!  And no one said anything about being or not being period.  :)

That is great.  I've seen lots of macrame item, but nothing like that.  That's cool.
