Anyone know of a good pattern for Buttercup-esque garb?

Forgive my ignorance but who is Princess Buttercup? All I can think of is the Powerpuff Girls.

McCall's pattern M5444 is pretty close. You would need to make some adjustments.

A good friend of mine did the McCalls pattern above just so she can act as princess buttercup, lol

i believe she said her adjustments were basically the type of fabric ( i believe she used a sheer fabric, and then a soft velveteen under the sheer fabric) and about 5-6 yard of fabric,

but yes, you would definitely have to modify it to fit you and too look like princess buttercup :)

Which dress are you looking at specifically?  Many of the lord of the rings ones can be editted to look similar to the orange gown...

I don't really care which gown. It's actually for Halloween ;D so I just want it to be something that people could accept as Buttercup (my fiance is going to be the Dread Pirate, so that should help).

Yeah, who wouldn't want a change to go out with the Dread Pirate for a night. :) Plus, of course, I can reuse the dress for faire!

This pattern reminds me of the EVER AFTER red dress! (one of my favorites!)

Have you tried looking in simplicity patterns? They've always done good by me.

isabelladangelo

Simplicity 9891.  If you do the grey dress on the cover out of orange, it will look like the riding dress, somewhat, that she wears through most of the movie.

http://www.mediaevalmisc.com/pp26.htm  <- This will lead you to the Houpelandes patterns page (although one of those is REALLY easy to make without a pattern) which is what the orange dress was supposed to be.

Well, if you wanted to do the red dress http://media.monstersandcritics.com/articles/1172159/article_images/truelove.jpg that she's wearing when the Dread Pirate Roberts kidnaps her, then you could use something like this:

http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4940

It's not ultra great, but you can alter the sleeves and make the neckline a bit shorter and use all red fabric.

If you don't care which gown, then why not the gown in which the dread pirate was with her the longest time?
The red gown is easy and pretty and you could wear it as a coat if need be.

Buttercup in Red:

This gown is what I think was fashioned from a Houppeland,

Or there is also this one Buttercup in Blue:

Buttercup in Pink this I only have in the top of the gown:

Both of these gowns can be made with a 2hour pattern from McCall!! It is very easy and I have used this pattern for I think 15 years now (in various renumberings)  Use Dupioni Silk to make the shininess and add some basic gold lace and you will a grand gown to wear with your dread pirate.

Or this one

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M8107.htm??tab=list/dresses&page=all

You will need to add the hanging sleeve for all of the gowns except the red one

I am a HUGE Princess Bride Geek so forgive my giving you a load of things to check out!  ;)

Are you in California? Cuz I could help ya with fabric and such and construction!

Yes, those patterns are great for Buttercup.  I've used a lot of those myself and they are rather easy to use.  Also, there might be some fabulous tips at costumersguide.com, especially for the red dress.

The Buttercup dress I like is her red one...  I cannot for the life of me find a decent picture of it!  ARGH!

Btw, you may have just inspired my halloween costume! Lol.

Lady Neysa

If you're fiance is dressing up as Westley I think the red dress would be the most recognizeable as Buttercup, but the wedding dress would be lovely too.  Diehard movie fans (me being one of them!) would instantly know who both of you are with him in the black and you in the red.

Totally random and maybe weird, but why am I now thinking about a ROUS-ish shoulder puppet for a touch of whimsey?

Charlotte Rowan

Awesome, thanks all! Your suggestions have all been great. I think the red/orange dress would be the most recognizable, so I'll probably do that one, even though I've always thought it was kind of ugly.  :D I'll probably use Simplicity 4940 or 9891 I think.

Cilean, I'm in MN, so a bit far, but thanks for offering to help!
