I love that fabric. And I must admit the one pictured on the left I thought was a steel counter at first, I had to take a second look at the picture  ;D

It was time to make some warmer weather garb for the kids, again. So far, I have material for Tristan to get a new shirt, and jerkin, but the Irish dress for Amara is nearly finished.

Never mind the purple chemise, it's an old one that wasn't stowed in the kids' room, and the picture was after bedtime.
I have to say I love having my daughter be able to go with to pick fabric and trim. At first I wasn't sure about the red against the blue, but its turning out nice. And thankfully, the fabric shore didn't have enough of the bright, bubble gum pink fabric and Just need to finish the inner edge of a high hem (I'm folding in about 4 inches of growing room), run one more stripe, and try my hand at binding eyelets. And of course, bribe my wife to sit and clip threads....

The ruffled collar and cuffs for my high-necked smock-in-progress! (Construction details are in the last post in this thread.)

QuoteWhat's the embroidery on the collar and cuff? Do you have an embroidery machine or are you *that* good? It looks so uniform! You're making me want to start *my* smock.

LOL, Wicked! As it happens, I actually *am* that good--but this is just one of the deco stitches on my machine. What I am *not* is that fast. Or that decisive! LOL It's quite a bit quicker to test a bunch of deco stitches and pick one you like well enough... than to embroider up a bunch of samples by hand!!

Go smock!! You must have gotten some fabulous fabric in one of your many hauls this summer.

Did you also do the edge work on the collar/cuffs with your machine?  If so, can it be done with any old machine?  I'm making myself a new shirt, and I'd like to do the edges like that with some black thread.  I was thinking of doing a tight zig-zag stitch, and carefully following the edge of the collar.  Think that would work?  If I get some time maybe I'll do a test of it.  Right now I'm in the middle of kid costumes!  I teach myself how to sew, and now I'm getting requests for Halloween!
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Cool on both counts! Are you for hire? (only kind of joking)  ;D

Erm, ask the other forum member who is currently waiting on her embroidery piece if you want to "hire" me.  :-[

Niall--sorry, just seeing this! I did the brown edging on my serger, and if you click on the link in my earlier post, it will take you to the "Serger Edging for Chemise Ruffles" thread where you see the whole sordid conversation about getting that look!

A narrow zigzag may very well work to get a nice edge. Mine is a rolled hem (warning, a sewing machine "rolled hem" looks *completely* different), but I'd go ahead and experiment with what you have!

Oh, I'm LOVING this!

I've finally started working on my "Moda Romana" - a dress in the Roman style:

From top left: Vittoria Farnese ca. 1540, Giulia de' Medici or Ortensia de' Bardi, 1559, Portrait of a lady with dog ca. 1570, and wool felt being attached to the back panel of the bodice.

These portraits are often described as widows. But the dark dresses, large golden veil and lack of jewelry only reflects the fashion of Roman ladies. It's a consistent feature in all female portraits, young and old.

I'm attempting a period construction with lining, wool felt padding and linen cardboard boning. The actual dress will be of black velvet, maybe with a discrete black trim. I've been wanting to make this kind of dress for years, I think I bought the linen cardboard three years ago. I just haven't had the time and money to do it. Needless to say I'm very excited!

Anea, your pictures aren't coming through for me, but the project sounds very exciting!

I have SMOCK! It's oddly hard to photograph, but here:

Just need to actually attach the ruffled cuffs and collar, and this baby's DONE!

Wickedvox

It's so pretty! I've never seen one with a gathered empire waist. Did you draft it or use a pattern?
