All this talk about Loki has me definitely curious about trying it this year!

Hey there! I'm a newcomer that stumbled into these forums while trying to google some answers to my questions about camping at TRF. After lurking for a little while, I've decided that I'll stick around.  ;)

Anyway, some friends and I decided we want to camp out this year the weekend of Oct 31-Nov 2. I'm excited, but I don't really know what to expect. I hear that the camping scene is craaazy. Though that sounds pretty cool, I'm a little scared for my safety. Is there a section of the campsite that would appeal more to the meek, like myself? Like, a quiet corner that I could slink off to when things become overwhelming? Possibly, to sleep?

Also, do things fill up pretty fast? There's no way I can come on Friday, so will I be SOL to come early on Saturday morning? To reserve my space, I'm assuming we can just park Nov 1st morning in our spot, and then set up everything in the evening after coming back from the Festival (I just wouldn't want to risk theft by setting up the tents early).

Okay, cooking. What exactly is the policy for cooking devices? I have a little stove/grill thing that I like to use with either charcoal or sterno. Is that kosher as far as the rules are concerned?

Alright, I think that's it. Maybe I'm over-analyzing things, but I like to be prepared, in the "know". Thanks so much, and feel free to add any helpful advice/anecdotes/horror stories, whatever.

Thanks again!

Molly,
The first year I camped out with me and my girlfriends...a girls weekend thing... My friend was petrified about someone coming into our tent.  I told her not to worry.  I went to Walmart and bought these little bells that clamp on to the end of your fishing poles so if you are night fishing you can hear somethings nibbling at your line.  I clamped one of those on the inside zipper of the door and she relaxed and was no longer afraid, as she felt it would alert her if someone was trying to get into the tent.  It gave her peace of mind.

Erm, methinks it may be McLotofi.....wow- sounds like some secret society that sacrifices virgins and sings in Latin. WAIT! That IS what we do (does it matter that I sing in "Latin American"?)!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
When did we last have a human virgin over the age of 16 in our camp? How did I miss her? I've got to do something about this getting slow with age.... ;) ;)

Last year was our first year to camp....I was nervous about it but when we got there on Friday afternoon we just went to the way back of the newly cleared stuff and camped along the tree line.  I checked with everyone that was already there to make sure no one was coming and it was all good.  We kept to ourselves all weekend and had a great time. I'm thinking I may feel secure enough this year to venture out and be friendly.  We'll see. What I'm trying to say is:  We had a blast (there were around 10 or 11 of us) we felt included and safe.  It is a good good time.

Maybe next year we'll have a flag?  Maybe this year....

See you all there

We've camped the past three or four years (the rum makes me memory a bit hazy), without actual problems.
But the area we have been in keeps getting louder. This year we are going to try the Family Snoozing Section. We can walk to the hooting if we feel, and sleep when we are ready.
At least in theory.  ;D

The first year - no problems AT ALL.
The second year - we had teenies who were trying to become the problem. They settled down when we adopted a nest of rats. Someone parked near to us with zero parenting skills and about six kids - so we took them in and kept them off the road and away from the fires - and it kept the teenies busy.
The third year - offensive neighbors.
The fourth year - last year, we had a car crash right outside our tent. Someone who should NOT have been driving drove into someone else's trailer. And in the excitement, someone else drove WAY too close to the tents, actually nicked the guy wires.

BUt, you know, there are stupid people everywhere.  ::)

The fun is worth the inconvenience. And if you enjoy a liberal bit of spiced rum with your fun, not driving is a definate plus.
The kids love the camping.
We love the rest. :)
