Flemish Bonnet?
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:59:37 PM »
OK - I posted this over at the old forums just a few days before they got eaten alive - so I never saw any responses that may have been posted.  So... here we go, again!

Here are some photos of the 'Flemish bonnet' I bought from the Wheat Goddess at RPFS last week. I was told by the nice lady that sold me the hat that it was to be worn with a coif.  I know little to nothing about Northern styles - so I don't know if this is historical or not. (The hat, not the coif-wearing.  I'll wear a coif with it.)  Frankly, I don't care too much - I think it's freakin' adorable and I'll wear it all the time.  But it would be nice if I knew if it was or was not actually based on anything.  Has anyone ever seen anything like it?

The closest thing I can see it resembling is the headdresses from Cleves - looking at it straight on, it resembles the Anne of Cleves portrait by Holbein.  Thoughts?

It has an Anne of Cleaves feel, doesn't it?  But I can't find anything in that exact shape...probably "historically inspired" might be a more fitting description.  Still, it's ADORABLE!!!

You might look into references for "Flemish hoods."  The term is floating around the Web, referring to a number of different things--from the linen headdresses that DC posted, to something rather like a gabled hood... but I think somewhere in there is Wheat Goddess's inspiration.  Here's one picture I found, but don't have a reference for (the woman on the left):

OMG that bonnet is adorable, and you look great in it too.  Sorry not much help on the HA of the item but just had to say it's really an awesome hat!

Not gonna be much help on the H/A end of things either, but it is adorable and you love it so H/A sort of becomes irrelevant to my way of thinking... Very lovely bonnet, now I want one...  :)

Hee!  Thank you! :)

Yep, I've decided to wear it regardless of authenticity - I just like to be *aware* of my choices so I can answer questions if people ask.  Ya know? ;)

Here is a picture of Anne of Cleves and that does look like the hood she is wearing:
http://tudorhistory.org/cleves/clevesnew.jpg  But it also looks like a modified gable hood that was favored by Katherine of Aragon and Jane Seymor

Laura!  I wanted to draw your attention to this painting ("Mary Magdalene Reading") by  Flemish painter Ambrosius Benson:

Her veil looks rather familiar, doesn't it?!

Oooh!  Yeah, that veil draping looks very similar... and that's such a pretty painting. :)  Thanks!
