Is La Paloma Hats still at TRF?  Have been looking for them.  I "need" a hat, but not a costume-y one.

They aren't there anymore.  The Kings Wine Tasting moved into their spot.  Good luck in your hat search!  They are still on the web at http://www.lapalomahats.com/

I see a trip to Scarby will be in my cards (like it wasn't anyway).  Thanks!

IIRC, La Paloma is the outfit that makes hats of cheap velveteen over PLASTIC FREAKIN' CANVAS and charges around $100 for that.

Assuming you have opposable thumbs, you can make one just as nice for far, far less.

The tall hat I have from them is beautifully constructed and a gorgeous tapestry type fabric.  Unless I take it apart, I don't know what the base is & I frankly don't care if it's plastic.  It rains in Houston - a lot - and buckram wouldn't hold up to the damp.

I'm happy w/their quality.

I personnally own 4 La Paloma hats and have received quite a few compliments regarding them.  They are beautiful, very well made QUALITY hats and I certainly don't mind paying for something that I believe to be of good quality.  I do have opposable thumbs, I just choose to use them for other tasks and leave the hat making to someone with much more experience in the craft.

Oh my gosh I have a lust affair with La Poloma and their lovely hat's. Lust for I never purchased the one I tried on while visiting TRF a few years ago. I still remember it fondly. Lovely things.

Are they at Scarby? I missed their shop somehow while I was visiitng. :(

Hey, just come across the lane from the wine tasting shop and get a leather hat from me! Jeez, they even come with a "you kill it, we replace it" guarantee for 5 years!

Yes, I'm promoting the shop......might as well.

Does that include digestion by a closet monster?   ;D

I spoke to the proprietress of La Paloma Hats while I was at Bristol this summer and she mentioned that she was pulling out of Texas.

No, there is (or was?) a hatter there who had some lovely hats & since I am a hat ho from way back, I always enjoy the process of buying a new hat.  I'm sorry La Paloma is no longer at TRF - I was looking forward to adding a new chapeau to the my small ren hat collection.

I had so many hats that I was able to sail through chemo and mailed a large box of hats to a lady whose mom was having chemo earlier this year.

I have never had as many compliments while wearing any of my hats then when I wore the La Paloma hat that my husband bought me for our anniversary this summer at Bristol.  It is beautiful,  a marvelous pintuck green taffeta, light on my head, which is very important to me, and I don't sweat or melt while wearing it.  It is well-constucted, and what was so much appreciated was the excellent customer service that they provided.

I think I tried on just about every hat in the store -- twice or three times -- and they never rushed me, never made me feel like I was wasting their time, and they made suggestions to help me get the most flattering hat, and they did, as I noted that I receive so many compliments each time I wear it.

Huzzah to my La Paloma hat.

I doubt there are any closet monsters that would eat them....they're all leather. But yes, they'd be repaired or replaced no matter what happens to them.

My dearest Ice Queen, you got me. Hitting the hand instead of the punch with the hammer is generally a bad idea indeed!

Yes, but I also noticed how dedicated you are as you diligently returned to the task at hand, without so much as a whimper...

A true artist ye be my good man!!  ;)

I thank thee for the compliment.

Dedication is a good thing to have as a value. I like working with my hands on pretty things. However, working on my hands isn't so pleasant! ;D

I wanted a more petite feminine hat for my Elizabethan garb and searched the great land of eBay.  I found the following seller.  She was wonderful to work with.  Extremely accomodating.  Will make hats out of ur own fabric, if u send it to her. She'll do rush orders without any fuss or extra charge.  The hats are all very period!! Very well made, and good for the pocket books!!  I got the hat and matching caul for only $65.  When i got them, i put my own beads on them to jazz them up a bit.  i love them!!

I agree with Rumy, her hat is georgous.  I decided I needed one too, so I emailed her on Monday and finally got all the details worked out on Tuesday.  It required her to embroider and make a new caul for me and she did it that day and sent it out that day too so that it would arrive by this Friday for me!!!  Talk about awesome!

Also, for those who like HA, she uses a variation of the Lynn McMaster pattern which is very period correct from what I've heard.
