In my middle school for home ec. we used paper towels to learn to sew lines and such. you could use the patterned "quilted" ones to learn all sorts of stuff.

Its funny my Home Ec teacher said I was horrid at sewing and that I would never be any good.....

she ate her words when she saw the nobles gown I sewed for my senior project.

I had a little giggle at the look in her face

Oh, I love hearing that!!

(and I would say that there's a big difference between sewing fun costume stuff and truly crappy good-for-nothing school stuff... I was really bored in Home Ec class).

Revenge is  sweet when someone says you will never amount to anything or do anything of significance. Then when you do, the other person is rendered speechless.

Like with my boss at the Costume Shop I helped her build.

I went with my sister to JoAnne Fabrics today, you should have seen the crazy looks I got from the ladies who were clucking around the pattern books. Anyway, I found a couple of things I like. A nice tunic that, I think looks nice and simple, and then it has a more "noble" feel to be added with some extra embellishments so if the simple one turns out nice, I might try to make two. My only concern about the pattern is that there are gatherings (I hope that's the right term, it looks like scrunched up parts of cloth) of the material to be sewn in and I wonder if that might be a bit too ambitious. Your thoughts on gatherings??

Not sure which pattern you are attempting, but gathering isn't that difficult.

Sew two rows of longer stitches, on either side of where the seam will be and pull up the rows to gather. Adjust the gathers so they are even (not all bunched in one place) Then  sew the two layers of fabric together, inbetween the rows of gathers. When your seam is done, pull out the gatherings.
