Torn on Childs Outfit

I'll be attending Ohio Renaissance Festival which runs from Aug 30-Oct 19th...  So, Its going to be very warm...

This year I'll have my son with me who will be 8 months to nearly 10 months by the time its over.....  I already know our days are going to be shortened with him there because of the warmth, the fact that I'm nursing him, and he just gets cranky at times...  haha.

I had previously said I would dress him in some garb since myself and my husband garb-up...  but I'm starting to give it second thoughts.

I had also thought I may just settle with something cutsie like a onsie we have for him (that I can go out and purchase for the size he'll be then) that has a little pirate on it and says "AARG" and put a tricorner hat on him or something.  I don't want him in too many layers because of the heat, but I also don't want him OVER exposed (I put baby sun block on him....  but I'm an over protective mommy)

Thoughts?

In my experience is hot kids at faire can result in a less than fun day.  So you may want to opt for the cute onsie as opposed to an overheated fussy baby....which you still may get in August.

When I garb the kids, my daughter wears short sleeves on her dress and I put my son in a short sleeve white shirt under his doublet.  I also bring a change of cool clothes in case they get fed up with the garb mid-day.  My feeling is I want them to think faire is a positive experience not one they have to suffer through a few times a year.

Remember, infants historically were smocked. Boy or girl, a full lenght chemise out of something that'll breath easy, long or short sleeve. It'll keep the sun off, and not be too warm. Besides, makes it real easy to change diapers, just lift, and there you go. It what we did with my daughter for her first year. I must say, I've never gotten so many reactions to any of the other garb I've made.

I'd go with the chemise idea (which is lovely!) or just make a cover for the diaper that looks like paned slops and have the kid go shirtless.

We took our son at 5 or 6 months. I made basic barbarian garb for him: vest, shorts, & belt.  I did that for the first few years, cheap and easy and comfy.

I'm with Hoowil and Isabella--smock/chemise.  And I'd make it out of the softened linen from Fabrics-store.com (you wash and dry it three or four times and it is the softest, most wonderfully breathable stuff on Earth).  You could grommet/eyelet up the front and lace with cording (is that safe for a 10mo?)  You could also make it from any color you want.  This Simplicity Pattern might be a good start, if you even needed a pattern.

If it's a boy, how about a kilt over the diaper!   Start him early!

I love doing the smock idea, and think it actually might feel cooler to your baby than a onesie, depending on the fabric. However, there certainly is the convience factor of being able to buy a onesie, and the baby could wear the onesie elsewhere too. The one you posted is really cute. Whatever you decide, I'm sure your baby will be adorable and will get lots of attention.

They make it in a onesie, but I got my daughter a little shirt at the local scottish games thats simple white, with black lettering  "When I grow up, I want to be a bagpiper."

i have to agree that there's nothing cuter than a little person in costume, even if it's just a simple smock, but I did recently see (sorry can't recall where) a onesie that said " I soiled my garb" it was pretty cute too.

Fortune Rose don't worry about sounding like a overprotective mom.  We all want to protect our children from the sun, especially  infants who feel the heat more then adults   do. 
   My son was 6 months old  when we  first attended the faires in  southern California  when we lived out there.   He   was  and still is very fair skinned, so i dressed him in a light weight   sleeper, and then i used sun block that ws specially made  for infants  on his  face and hands, and put a sun hat on his head.   
  And even though he was not in garb, and mommy and daddy were, he got all kinds of attention, and no one  could care less that he was not  in garb !
       
        So use your best judgement and  do what you feel comfortable  doing.

     When my son got abit older around  a year old, i went to a local halloween costume  shop, and brought him a cute  inexpensive     robin hood  outfit.
    We did not start him on fancy garb  till he was two and  a half, and less likely  to soil  anything.
