Having chanced on the book "Swordheart" by T. Kingfisher, I'm almost finished with another of hers called "A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking." Her style tends to be a bit wordy, but I would call it a gently comic fantasy, which is A-OK with me :) Recently finished Lucy Worsley's biography of Agatha Christie, which I'd chosen for my library's non-fiction book club. We enjoyed it, and learned many things about her we didn't know.

sounds good :)

I've recently slipped and bruised a rib ( cat vomit was the worthy cause of slip ) so I've had some extra reading time.. got Holly, You Like It Darker and Pet Semetary done the King, a couple of Freida Mcfaddens, The Confessions of Young Nero by Margaret George, Apothecary Rose..my first Owen Archer, Pachinko by Min Lin Jee, and just finished Brother by Ania Ahlborn...a neat horror.

starting All Our Yesterdays, a novel of Lady McBeth by Joel H. Morris

Happy reading!

So sorry to hear about the injury! I hope the Cause of It All (i.e., the vomiting cat) is well, and you're healing. That is quite the list; I've never heard of a few of them. I hope the Owen Archer proved enjoyable; I have really liked that series. I have only read one Stephen King, because a good friend who is passionate about King has verified for me that because I'm an absolute wimp when it comes to scary stuff, I should avoid King for my health :), except for a book called The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, because I'm a baseball fan, and this one is quite mild re: the horror stuff. After I read it, I told him I really liked it, and he asked how I coped with the monster, and I asked, What monster? He asked if I read the right book :) I did re-read it a couple of years ago, and dang, there was a monster. I'd totally missed that  8)

hahahaha...you missed the monster..maybe you are not a horror wimp after all! I love King..although he can be quite longwinded...I just finished Brother by Ania Ahlborn..sad, gory, disturging...I liked it. Yes, I did enjoy Owen Archer..have number two on deck.  The cat is fine, thanks..we have 5 in the house so one of them is always leaving a potential slip pile.

Happy reading!!

My middlest daughter has gotten involved with something called a Silent Book Club. They got together in an independent book store near her in Chicago (called "Bookies," of course) and now meet in a nearby coffee shop. They meet and read silently together, and they don't read the same book. They read whatever they like, in whatever format they prefer, and sit companionably for an hour, just reading together. She says they may talk about what they're reading, whether they're enjoying it, etc., and sometimes members will recommend titles to the others, but basically it's a peaceful gathering of folks just reading together. She says it's calming, and comfortable, without any pressure on having to finish something by a specific date, or analyze something like English majors. I explained the concept to my department at the library, and we're going to start one with our summer reading program and see how people like it.

anything that gets folks reading more or just reading is a great idea. this sounds like a lovely change of pace.

I'm about 50 pages from finishing "When the Moon Hits Your Eye," by SF writer John Scalzi. For an as-yet unknown reason, the moon has turned to cheese, including all of the samples of moon rocks brought back by NASA. It's been a wild ride of a book, and I can't imagine how this one is going to turn out.

I picked up a book for my 8 YO grandson, called Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible, by Ursula Vernon. That is the real name of T. Kingfisher, whom I referenced earlier, but she uses her real name for her kids' books. It was silly and fun; a takeoff of Sleeping Beauty. I don't know if my grandson will like it, but I enjoyed it. And it's first in a series of 6, so I may be set for a while, lol
