What's funny about Darth Vader and The Stormtrooper in samurai armor, is that the design of the helmets doesn't really detract from the armor and look too futuristic, because the real masks/helmets sometimes look just that weird. and they just go right with it. I say whom ever thought of that had a pretty good idea. They combined two dissimiliar things and foudn the similiar between them if that makes any sense.

I believe that's what Lucas actually designed Vader after. He took the look of a shogun warrior and "futurized" him.

Right on. We'd have to read more about the making of Star Wars to find out if that was his true idea or it just ended up that way.

Actually, if you watch the "making of" whole long special feature to the DVD version of the SW trilogy, I'm pretty certain I recall him specifically talking about that as being the inspiration for Vader's suit. I'd have to go back and watch it again to be sure...(oh, such a chore! :D)

FYI.....if you chose to accept it..... :P

Jedi in Star Wars are Templars in medieval Crusades

When George Lucas created the concept for Star Wars, with his knowledge of history he must surely have been aware of the parallels with the history of the Knights Templar, a mysterious and secretive society of warrior monks.

"In the first Star Wars scripts the Jedi Knights are called Jedi Templars," said Cavalorn, an historian of the occult seen recently in Channel 4's acclaimed Rasputin documentary. Lucas' involvement with the creation of the last Indiana Jones movie, The Last Crusade, demonstrates his awareness of the medieval Grail Legends, in which the Templars are the key.

During the Crusades the Knights Templar became the most powerful religious Order in the world. Today the Knights Templars enjoy cult status among those who know them. There are whispers in certain circles that the tale of the Jedi Knights in Star Wars was inspired by the tale of the Templar Knights in medieval history.

The Jedi are reminiscent of the Templars in certain key points. If the Jedi are a metaphor for the Templars, that would make the Jedi master Obe Wan Kenobi none other than Jaques de Molay the lost Grand Master and leader of the Templars. De Molay was murdered in the 14th Century by King Phillip of France who conspired with Pope Clement V. The Pope therefore represents Darth Vader, which makes the King of France The Emperor of the Dark Side. The Pope bestowed upon the King of France (called "the frog" by some) the title of Holy Roman Emperor.

In the ancient Grail Legends, which are loosely based on history, the Knights Templar are credited with supernatural powers. They are the guardians of the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant, and custodians of ancient wisdom. Could this be a clue to The Force that a Jedi Knights must learn to master?

There are many other links between the Templars and the Jedii. And like the Jedi, when the Templars lost their master, the tradition was almost lost...

May The Force Be With You.

It's true the Star Wars Trilogy like many art works of the renaissance are allegories for things in history or evryday life. On History Channel they had the parallels all listed and shown and the whole grail quest, and the idea of magical weapons was taken from the grail legends, the space craft and characters and legends based on aircraft and stories taken from old World War 1 and World War 2. The fighters especially the X-Wing and Darth Vader's Tie was like the Snoopy vs. Red Baron with the Sopwith Camel as the Brits and The Fokker Dr.1 as the German. And the whole prequel trilogy was mired in political satire/drama based on all political ideaologies that have been with us for centuries.
