Lady Amy of York

Hello everyone.  I'm looking for  a new pair of pirate boots to wear with  my pirate pants, and  captain's  frock  coat.  The thing is I  want a flat boot (  no heel   )   since   with   my back,  etc...  it is hard for me to walk in heels  .  I have looked at different websites and every thing i see  has a heel.

Anyone have  any suugestions  or know of any  websites  or merchants ?

I was thinking   of going to one of the local horse/ tack shops, but even there  most riding boots( atleast all  the ones i have owned  have heels on them ).

I'll settle for a half inch heel if i have to , i just don't want to fall flat on my   butt ! Unless there is  a  handsome  gentleman  nearby ! :) ;)

Greetings, Lady Amy! 'Tis truly a fine thing to "see" you on your feet again!  ;D

I haven't worn them personally, but I've heard nothing but positive feedback {on the old R/F forum mostly} about SCA Boots. I looked into getting a pair for my Betrothed to wear in the wedding, but they're not quite his tankard of ale  ;)

This link should take you to their flattest-heeled option.

Greetings.  I totally understand your problem.  I also refuse to wear heels as I like my back.  I found 2 ifferent styles on this site http://www.realmcollections.com/p1516/ladys-boot.html.  You can also try Lady Oren, I know she makes shoes and boots.

Check out the Online shoe stores... Shoe Pavillion had a few wonderful pair of good looking piratical style boots.

Thanks  for all the suggestions...shall check them all out.   Besides wanting a flat heel, which is hard enough  to find,  I  am also a   tall girl   5  ft, 11 inches )   with a large  foot  size.   ( size 11  ).    Makes it hard to find  sometimes in a woman's  boot.  I have  gorgeous pair of  riding boots ( from my riding  days ) i use to  wear with my outfit, but they kill  my feet by  mid  day.    Blisters  are no  fun !!

geetings lady just off the top of my head have tryed mens boots they seem to be wider in foot than womens and you find that you can wear a smaller size in the mens boots. Mens boots I think come in mre styles as well you can add to them to make look the way you want them to  Just a thought.

yes. i was thinnking of looking at  a man's boot. The majority of the time i end  up buying a man's  boot  or  sneaker, because of  my large  foot  size !

Anyone ever consider doing a stickie on the boot thread?  lol  Just a thought.

{moderator} before the Great forced crash, we atually were working on a page with links to common questions.... To put topics such as this one as all stikied, would make the new posts harder to find.  At this time, the answer will stand as no to the stickie.  However, there will be a poitn where we will start working on the "Most Common" Thread. {/moderator}

First off, I would not recommend going to a tack shop, since most riding boots are made with a heel to keep the foot from sliding through the stirrup.

That being said, I can offer no real help, only commiserate about the fact that I, too, have large feet.  Same size as you, in fact.  Good luck with your hunt!

Since I have the same problem, I wear a size 11 wide with, my family says I have Fred Flintsone Feet, so I have already done this research.  Here are several online links to plus sized ladies catalogs that specialize in hard to find sized in clothing and shoes:

You can also try your local Avenue's shopes.  At this time of year they have their boots on sale and they carry the cloudwalker line so the boots are like wearing a sneaker and have all the proper support.  Infact I have 2 pair of the low boots I picked up last year for $10.00 a piece and they usually run about $65.00 a pair.  Hope this helps!!!

Folks, some of you might remember the topic I brought up before the last place was hacked about Various types of boots, and are they worth the high price, or not. Well, I got a lot of good responses from people and I used some of that great advice to make a boot purchase. I ended up buying the Cavalier Boots from Ravenswood leather. These are the same boots that Champion Attitude boots sells for one dollar cheaper. These boots are very well made. CA boots makes a lot of historical reproduction type boots , and the cavalier boots look a lot like cavalry boots. Which I guess fits. Now, these boots are made the way boots have been made for centuries-meaning they are essentially cobbled together. The leather soles have nails and pegs in them to hold the instep and shank in place and they have a nail constructed heel. The sole is sewn on to the uppers, not molded like so many other types of boots, so they are more historically accurate and able to be repaired and resoled for years to come. These boots are also leather lined...not all boots are anymore. most have sort of a fabric lining that tends to promote footstink. Leather lining means that the boots are easier to get on and off, wear better over time and are more comfortable to wear because they mold to your foot. In short, they are a better-made product for the money...which is what I want. I can't thank the Ravenswood Leather and Champion Attitude boots enough for the great product.

Thank you for this post!  I've always had heavy calves, so wearing knee-high boots was always out for me.  Now I know where to get them!

About two years ago  I found some great, very piraty boots at Target. I found them around Halloween. I have back problems too, and these boots don't bother my back at all because they have absolutely no heel. Since pirates are stilll en vogue, they may have some still.

Another cheap place to look is Hot Topic.  I bought a pair of mid-calf length black leather boots last year off their clearance rack for about $20.  They probably won't last quite as long as some SCA boots or anything like that, but they're great in the meantime.  I bought mine last year and wore them all season and on Halloween and they're still in great shape, so we'll see how they do for this season.  They look great too!  And they don't have a heel.  Great for standing for hours.

A bucket boot "cheat":

Lane Bryant boot:

Measure your calf just below the knee.  Use that measurement, plus one inch, as the inside of a circle of fabric store "leather".  Cut a one inch wide piece of non-roll elastic slightly smaller than the calf measurement.  Sew it top & bottom to the top of the bucket.

Make a 1/4" hem & turn the elastic under.  Sew the sides together & trim to 1/4".

Flip & Voila! Bucket boots!

The major thing I would do different is make a bigger circle.  Not perfect, but a good compromise when you have thick legs & short funds for custom boots.  Roll the bucket & store it in your boot to keep your boot from flopping over.

NOTE:  Put the bucket on BEFORE you put your boot on as it will not go on over the boot.  Flip it up over your knee to keep it out of the way until your boot is on & then flip it down.
Sveethot!
