will this look goofy?

I have a question for the garb experts here.  I am preparing to attend a medieval feast put on by our local SCA.  I have made the sideless surcote  described by Lady Jehanne de Wodeford (www.wodefordhall.com/surcote.htm).  I plan to wear Butterick's 4827 gown under the surcote. My question is this: I made the gown a few years ago with a slight train, and the surcote last week without a train. How goofy would it look to have the gown with a train under the surcote without a train?  I hate to cut the train off the gown, although I did consider tacking it up for the evening. What say you? ???

I am not an expert on medieval garb. There is a pic of an italian with the underdress having a train and the overdress not. I think it "looks" fine. I just don't know if its "historically correct".

I see no reason why the underdress cannot have a train and the overdress not. Sounds fine to me.

Having once been part of a SCA Shire several years ago, the one I was a part of  got  pretty anal if one's garb was not accurate. I did not fit in becuase I was too much into the 16th Century as far as dress was concerned.

Gramercy for the input!  That is just what I wanted to hear!  I didn't really want to alter the undergown.  I like it the way it is now. :)  I know my garb won't measure up to strict HA guidelines, but I'd just like to enjoy the feast and sort of fit in. ;)

Not to derail the thread, but I have always adored that italian gown.  The styling, fabrics, color and trims are to die for!

I say go ahead and wear your gown the way you want, but if you decide to go without the train, pin it up rather than mess up the underdress.  Have fun at your feast!

It sounds fine to me.  If you are really self conscious about it, you might want to just pin up the train with pins or you can tuck it into your belt.

I love using that surcote pattern btw.  It always comes out great!
