Since we have the beading topic, I thought I would start one on quilting.

I'm about to begin making a quilted petticoat. I already have all the fabrics (outer layer, cotton quilting layer, and muslin backing), but I don't know how to sandwich them together so I can start the project. And then how do they stay together so that they don't slip around while I'm quilting?

Ive never done a quilted petticoat but when I make a quilt I pin the bejeebers out of it. Around the edges and in the center.

Good luck!

You need to 'sandwich' the quilted layers...  Lay down the backing, lay the batting on top of it and smooth it out, and lay the (marked with the pattern first!) top layer on top of that.  Then baste them together.  You can pin baste, using quilters curved quilting safety pins: the pins can go in rows, but make sure they are no more than 5" apart in any direction.  You can use a basting gun and little plastic tags (same distance apart), or you can hand baste using basting thread and sewing large (2" long) stitches in rows about 4"-6" apart.  Always start the basting in the middle and work evenly out to the edges.

Here's how a friend and I basted her 18th C silk quilted petticoat together for hand quilting: http://community.livejournal.com/dressdiaries/502930.html  (Scroll down: it's in the middle of this post!).

I've never tried it, but I'm following the progress of a LJ friend who's hand quilting one as we speak:

Thanks, Kate! I will hopefully get it all basted/pinned together by tonight, so I can start quilting as soon as possible. I cut the fabrics out last night, then realized I hadn't bought enough muslin for the backing, and I only have enough quilt batting if I piece it together, so although the back panel is ready to go, I'm going to need to head back to Joanns before I think about the front.

And yeah, I'm following her progress, too. I hope mine turns out as good as hers is looking!
