Where do you find your 'new' music?

I'm a tad out of touch...I love music of almost any type (no Rap, Opera, or Country please).  But no one I hang with seems to care much about it.  I'd be hard pressed to find someone to share opinions with.  Oddly, as late I find my best source for new music is commercials (and I hate commercials all most as much as opera!).  So my latest find is from an Old Navy commercial...http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/info.do?cid=39628&tid=ONGO454557&kwid=1&ap=4  It's the group lights, song title "Last thing on your mind".  I'll be picking up the CD tomorrow.

So where do you find "new" music?

Try Pandora.com

It's free streaming internet music.  Decent quality, too.  When you sign in, you give it some idea of what you like; artists, songs, genres, and it starts shooting tunes your way that include those and similar artists.  You can give a song a thumbs up if you wish, and it further searches from there, or give it a thumbs down, and you won't hear that song again.  After a while, you have your own custom station that plays great music.  You can create multiple stations, too, if you have divergent tastes, and don't want to try to span too many genres with a single station.

I've found lots of good music and new artists there that I would not have found otherwise.

Check it out!

Thanks Tim T. Mostly, I get mine via a local alternative rock station on the radio.

downloading sites, local radio station, MYSPACE.  sad i know, but its an awesome networking site for music.  ive discovered so many good bands thru myspace

I keep my ears and eyes open.  If I hear something that catches my ear, I ask someone (usually younger than me) who it is.  I have my print sources as well, I regularly read "Dirty Linen" magazine, as it focuses on acoustic and roots music (including the blues) and they even keep track of some pretty darn good electric bands that throw in folk elements as well.  Sometimes Amazon (from whom I probably order most often) will "recommend" other acts to me, I give them a listen and see if I want to pursue them farther.  And of course, the ever reliable word of mouth rarely fails me when people who know what I like tell me to check someone new out.

another good idea....shows.  go to them as much as you can.  local/underground shows are typically $15 and under, and often you'll discover several new bands.

I admit, I'm a bit of a music snob. I'm not a fan of commercial radio and I listen mostly to modern rock and college stations. My favorite place for new music is woxy.com and small local stations. I also like specialty shows like Little Steven's Underground Garage.

I find it on Amazon. I find a band I like and then follow all the links that others leave. This was how I found Within Temptation, Xandria, Nightwish and many others 4 years ago. I also HAD one of my best friends who was a drummer (My old drummer to boot) who we each turned each other onto music.

Since AMazon usually lets you hear some of the music you get a good idea of what your going to get.

OH and Myspace is a great spot as Beeboy said to find great music.

If you like guitar music that is classical, jazz, blues, rock and many others mixed check out Dave Beegle and Jeff Wahl. Both are great guitarists from Colorado. Dave is better than many big named signed, and Jeff is good too. Now while I am shameless plugging both as I studied under Dave Beegle, and Jeff is my cousin, both get Airplay on the Local and even National NPR as Jeffs cousin (and mine is also the program director of Weekend addition on NPR which also intros some great music)

Honestly, Myspace has been my best friend...along with websites like Amazon/cdnow.com

I find a band I like on myspace and look at their top friends...rinse and repeat, I've found so much music!

Same with cdnow.com

Type in the name of a band you like and search the list of other bands like them..or other people who bought this blah blah also bought this!

Lady D seems to be on track, she listed all my favorite bands :P

I get weekly email from Amie Street with whatever's come to their attention. You get to listen and the cost of the music, if you decide you want it, is based on how popular it has been. Songs go anywhere from free to 99 cents.

I also find a lot of new things as I research for FaireNews posts. Blogs and MySpace sites often have playlists, though I wish everyone would put the player to the top and make the "stop" or "mute" button easy to spot.

I've also found some new stuff on recommendations from people I follow on Twitter. And, of course, there's always new shows at Faire. I'm looking forward to hearing 'Hither, Dither, and Yon' this weekend in Tennessee.

I got an email the other day for IACmusic.com and, so far, I'm really enjoying it. The email said the following:
Quote... thousands of My Space artists have migrated to IACmusic.com.   They set up a page and get immersed rather quickly because IAC is where the legitimate indie culture on the web congregates.  We don't bother with outdated gimmicks like friend lists but focus on the appreciation of quality music, the heart of the site is the amazing station/playlist set up which totally blows away anything of its kind anywhere else.  IAC belongs to the artists, it's the perfect union of internet and music ...

Don't know how much of that is true and how much of it is hype, but there's a lot of music there to listen to. Right now I've got Bamboo Music Station 187 playing as I work on FaireNews.

Kind of old school, but the radio, mostly. There are also music channels on Comcast, in the 900's. 913 is Classic Rock. It has Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Heart, and everything in between. Roughly 60's to 80's, with some live stuff from more recently.

Try www.audiomap.net

You put in an artist you like & it 'webs' out from there listing other people.  You can even web out from those other bands or artists it lists.

Pandora is great too, as someone mentioned.

Rage

I-tunes but honestly I am old Punk rock & 80 music fan so I don't look as much for new music.

Cobaltblu

I like to mug people for their I-Pods and the benefit is each time I get a nice random sampling of music.

My amazing wife.
The Lovely Lady Trinn was raised to truly appreciate art and music both and has an excellent ear for finding new local artists. It took me just this side of forever to rip the Lovely Lady Trinn's music onto my ipod.
I also use I-tunes and amazon.com when I am looking someone up and see the "similar results" to find new people doing stuff I like. That was how I got hooked on Great Big Sea and others of that type.
I rarely now to listen to top-40 radio regardless of who might be on, I just plug in my ipod and let it go. I have enough stuff on it now that it won't repeat for about 2-3 months and I'm still adding.

*Nothing better than sippin' rum and listening to sea shanties though...*
