Wrap pants, perhaps a kurta or other flowing shirt. Some earthy-looking scarves for both around your waist and as headscarves. If you want decoration, go with kuchi pendants, arm bands, etc. Since men (no offense) don't have much fashion sense it's been up to Roxanne and me to dress the boys of Wine and Alchemy, so I have a pretty good idea.  :)

Are you looking for HA or fun festival look?

I think bellydancer garb as different from gypsy garb...?

Wikipedia says that in England, "Gypsy" referred to "persons of nomadic habit of life, whatever their race or origin, but does not include members of an organised group of travelling showmen, or persons engaged in travelling circuses, travelling together as such." so your character doesn't really have to fit a particular origin.

However, considering that in the minds of what appears to be most people, "Gypsy" is practically synonymous with "Roma".  Gypsy garb seems as though it would reflect both Hindi or Middle-Eastern style (what they had to begin with) and a mish-mash of European styles (what they accumulated throughout their travels), with less of a regard for conventionality of clothing.

This should help! Pick a style, any style! ;D

I just did a gypsy weekend at Sterling. This is what I wore.

* Catskill Knee-High Boots (black)
* Brown peasant pants
* Green renaissance shirt
* Multicolored sash (blues, greens, black and rust)
* Blue bandanna trimmed in gold stitching
* Maroon and Beige (with black and gold trim) Moresca vest
* Black belt w/ typical accoutrements
* Lots of bells and other jewelry (necklaces, rings, etc.)

Hey Suka,
Careful my friend or you'll end up like me!!  Now playing doumbek for the group my fiance is in.  In my profile photo you can see what I've done.  Both Majikboxman and DeadBishop have excellent photos of me on their site(s) under the Minnesota Renaissance Festival galleries from last year.

Here is my outfit:
Black Harem pants (made by the loving fiance)
Basic renaissance shirt
Orange sash with red mesh sash for a belt
Red sash for head covering (it is long and hangs down to my lower back)
and of coarse the vest you see in my photo.  A gift from a friend.
Black peasant knee high boots from Son of Sandlar
A leather pouch.

I also have some reserve stuff that I use on occasion.  A leather doublet/jerkin that I use on colder days.  Just plain black at this point, but working to have slashes added in with color.  Also a leather ring belt.

This year I have made some adjustments.
I had a second vest made that I patterned off the one on the photo.  It is brown with trim.
A blue sash for my head scarf

Some advice:
Color matching does not matter.  Typically you want to have loud, flashy, fun colors.
Cotton fabric is the best.  My harem pants are a very light, very soft cotton.  It is perfect for those really hot days.  To add color, you can have the harem pants made where one leg is one color and the other leg is another color.  I'm boring, I do just plain black.

A great place that I've found get stuff already made is Moresca.com.

Best of luck!
