Well thanks for the thoughts anyhow.  Someone said a watch shop might have some, but I don't know of any in the area.  Well if anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them!!

Check eBay & Etsy.

OK, I could really use some help in finding larger watch works and metal parts and such.  I'm wanting to deck out my new shirt in lots of toggles and such, but not sure where to get ther larger ones.  I was thinking of buying a cheap clock at the store and taking it apart.  Has anyone tried this?  DOes anyone have other suggestions?

Occasionally you will come across older clocks at thrift stores.  HOWEVER, most of those gears have an axle, which needs to be removed, lest it scratch you.

I got the one-oz tiny watch parts - they are about the size of sequins.  Not much help at all...

Hello. I've recently become interested in steampunk, after seeing some very nifty outfits. I went through every page of this thread today (didn't read it all though) and stayed up way too late looking at costumes and accessories last night. I wasn't planning on making a steampunk costume anytime soon but a friend of mine said she'll have to kidnap me and take me to MomoCon, which apparently attracts a lot of steampunkers, in March, so I've been coming up with costume and persona ideas. I'm leaning toward using more old West influences than some and for the character, a Jane-of-all-trades, master-of-none, airship-hopping wanderer.

I really like this corset, to wear over a shirt, but I have to come up with a way to justify spending $100 on a piece of clothing (both to myself to and to my parents...hehe). ;p

By the way, here's a steampunk Batman head-and-shoulder piece made by a jouster:

Edit: While I was on a Stargate website I found an ad for this online series that looks steampunk: http://www.riesetheseries.com. I haven't watched it so I don't know if it's any good.

Picked up a grey tophat & a very cool leather steampunk borg-ish mask thing.  Pictures forthcoming.  I'm about 75% there on my costume and I need to get some input on where to go next.  Give me a few days to get them up.

Elennare

I'm about a month late, but here are the pictures of what I wore on Halloween (finally :P)

Just ran out of time to make my coat, but I'll have another chance at it.  The zoo here is going to have a Steampunk event in January, which I am going to, so I will need a coat.  Soon as I find them, I'll post details/link to the zoo thing, in case anyone is going to be in Seattle in January and wants to go.  :)

Neat! The corset turned out nice, and I really the skirt.

Elennare

Thanks!  :)

I found the info about the zoo thing.

Here's a blog with the fancy poster advetising it: http://community.livejournal.com/steamcon/59065.html

To see it on the zoo page itself, minus poster, and to sign up, go here: http://www.zoo.org/education/adult
It's on the upper right side of the page.

I don't know if the link's already been posted in this thread but here's a nice steampunk forum: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/

Elennare, here is a post on how to convert an ordinary (read Goodwill) coat into a tail coat:  http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=58180

The writer says it takes approximately one hour to make the conversion.  I love the short skirt.

almost completed choker necklace, all that's left is adjusting the size of the collar.

Kindly ignore the foot at the bottom of the picture I forgot to crop that out.
