Cultural Differences

Ok, so I've been expanding on my garb as of late, going in a direction that leads me to wear the clothing of different exotic cultures. I figure, my character is a pirate, and by saying that is exposed to many different things around the world. I was wondering about some North African/Egyptian clothing, since I'm already doing India (through one of the prettiest red and gold saris). Any ideas about fashion then?

You know, I found a really great tutorial on Youtube. Here's the link...

You start off by tucking the unfinished end at your right hip into a skirt or belt. You then wrap to the left, around once. You place 7 pleats in and tuck it into the front, directly under your belly button. If you pin your pleats, it's SO much easier to handle. Take the remaining fabric and wrap it around your front, following the waistband. When you get to your left hip, wrap the sari around the back from your left hip to your right armpit. Pass the fabric over your breast, then throw the remnant over your left shoulder. You can to a slight gather at the shoulder to help keep your arms free.

North African/Egyptian clothing is probably going to be similar to what we consider Middle Eastern clothing today. Renaissance depictions of 'Moors', especially in Spain show both men and women to wear garments that look like Salwars.
And of course the higher in rank the women were, the more was covered.

But if you are thinking about belly dancers - that is a different class of garb entirely.

Back in those times alot of pirates made their homes in the area of Madagascar and along those areas so if you want to go for the mix of the differnt cultures!

I love mixing the differnt cultures togeather, it makes for more fun when you are garb hunting!

I'm pretty sure women of North Africa/Egypt wore pants.  For me, that would be a bg comfort thing at faire.  Not sure if they would wear them in public though-something to look at.  Although a pirate probably wouldn't care about propriety.

A salwar is a long loose garment with side slits worn over baggy pants. also called a salwar kameez.

Hello!

my alternate personality is Turkish. I am also a bellydancer and this depiction is more historically accurate for dancers of the time, plus, it helps hide the pudge!

  I wear a ghawazee coat that is modified to have a higher neck. It is almost a salwar, but split down the front for ease of movement. Here are a couple of pics:   ( im in black)

I think from these photos you might see the differences in the two garments....both are worn with pantaloons.
