Did anyone out there see the openning ceremony for the Olympics?  Was it me or was there a portion that samcked of Gandalf walking with his staff, then looked alot like the scene where he jams his staff into the bridge of Khazad-dum in the Mines Moria as he yells to the Balrog "You shall not pass!"

No I haven't caught any of the Olympics yet.  But I think I am going to have to go looking for video of that.

On another Olympics related note NBC definitely played "He's A Pirate" (the pirates of the Caribbean theme song) during a skiing montage video talking about  the US down hill team. It cracked me up.

One of the figure skating duos also used that song on their routine last night.
The Americans used Phantom of the Opera and totally rocked it.
Olympics are the only sports I ever watch. Can't get enough of it!

I saw the opening ceremonies. I know which part you are talking about. It was suppose to depict  the different cultures , and provinces in Canada, but now that you mention it, yea he did look like Gandalf a bit.

How about the part with the fiddlers . Reminded me a bit of Lords of the Dance, except with fiddles.  All in all, i thought it was  a great opening ceremony, except for  the glitch at the end  with the Olympic  torch.

It has been a great Olympics so far. I love the winter events.  I love watching  the  ski events, especially the cross country. The scenery has been breath taking.

I agree with you Teach. The Americans really rocked it last night in their ice dancing performance. I was thrilled to see them get a silver medal.    I do feel though that the American team that came in fourth was much  better then the the Russian team that got the bronze.

Teach, if you ever get the chance to, go and visit  Lake Placid , New York.  It is the training grounds for some of the Olympic winter events. You can go and watch them train in  bobsled, luge, ski jumping, speed skating, figure skating. Also their a small museum there dedicated to the winter Olympics. Living in upstae New york ,I have been there a few times and have had  the oppurtunity  to see some of our Olympic  athletes in training. Mater of fact, my 6 year old son wants us  to move to Lake Placid  so he can be a ski jumper ! I told him how about something less dangerous.

There is also a big Olympic training center in Colorado Springs where both winter and summer athletes train due to the high altitude.

I really enjoyed the American ide dancers last night, also... but I have to admit that the Canadians were absolutely incredible in that event, and deserved the gold.  I also thought the other American couple were much better than the Russians, and deserved the bronze.  So far this is the only competition I've gotten to see, and I completely missed the opening ceremonies.  I'll have to check on youtube to see if it's there...

After watching the Ice Dancing I have come to the conclusion that the Russians costume designer was on acid. Some of those outfits were out there even for rennie standards lol

I saw once that you could train for like a week to be a luger, it was expensive. doesn anyone have any websites as to what you can do at Lake Placid as a "public" person and not a true athelete training?

During one of the ice skating events tonight, I heard another piece that sounded like it was from POTC.  I was in the kitchen, so I only heard it.  It was not a complete song, but sounded like Hans Zimmer wrote it  ;D

Sleepy Archer, I can ren mail you some info  if  you would like. There is plenty  to do and  see.  Some very nice shops, restaurants, and  some very, very nice hotels.  During the summer  you  can swim, sail, water ski, jet ski,  hike, bike  ride, horseback  ride, or just take  in the beauty of  the  mounatins. In the fall it it a very popular vacation area  for  the fall color. And in the winter, just about any winter sport  you can  do  there.
and if  you are not into sports there is  alot of other things  to  do. Alot of history up this  way, old  forts. A excellent museum on the Adirondacks. I'll ren mail what ever info  you  may  like.
