Actually, most good glass blowers can make you a bodice chiller.  All you have to do is describe the size and shape you want and most of them can do that.  I had a guy at scarby do it for me and he'd never done it before.  They turned out pretty great.

 I am charmed by the 'Knocker Gnome'.  He's 15$ not including the actual cooler part (additional $10)  the rest of the 'tops only' are in the $20-$25 range.  That's 25-35 bucks!

I have a glass blown one, and one of the pewter ones you've linked. I like the pewter one better. First, it seems to get colder and stay colder longer. Second, I don't have a stopper on my glass one and that's fine until you forget about it and bend over to tie your shoe lace or make other such move and end up soaking the front of yourself.

Ok i have never heard of bodice chillers, are they exactly what you call them? "Bodice Chillers"? How do they work? ect. . .

You fill them with ice and they sit nestled betwixt your girls inside of the bodice.  You need to periodically empty the melted water and refill them, but they seem to work nicely.

I have three of them:  glass as above, ceramic w/cork & one of the pewter ones above.  I didn't care for the glass one - bend over and you have a nice wet mess.  The ceramic has a wider opening for ice, which I liked better than the pewter.  These are really worth every penny on a hot, humid Houston day.  Before I bought my first "real" chiller I bought some refreezable tubes - the kind they make for water bottles, and they seemed to lose their cool rather quickly and no way to refresh them as needed.

I have a glass one as well, puchased from MIRF. I love it! It's so pretty, though I do hear the pewter ones stay cold longer. I *always* forget I have the thing in and out spills cold water. I've been thinking there must be a way to cap it. Is there such a thing as corks that large?

Yes!  Try Hobby Lobby.  Sometimes they are with the vases/glassware.
I think I saw some at Wal-Mart where the Mason jars/etc. are.

A cheaper version is the plastic tube some cigars come in - Just add crushed ice and your good to go - Most drink vendors will give you a cup of ice for free - I've always just dumped out the water and refill with ice through out the day

I have a question:  bodice chillers...how much condensation do they "sweat" on the outside?  I have an expensive bodice, and don't want any wetness getting anywhere near the metal.
does a plastic _cigar-protective-tube_ used as a cheap bodice chiller "sweat " condensation, too?  does a chiller "sweat " less if it has thicker walls?

Everything sweats, and with the bodice chillers that don't have caps, you have to be Very Careful about bending or you'll wet yourself.

I use the construction hat chillers from 50degree.com (might be 50degrees.com) and simply tuck them between my chemise and corset.

ok. got it about using a cap on top of a tube to prevent leakages.

with regard to small frozen "chillers" (I've seen that site: those things look good, but I have -$0)...I don't really want to keep several in a handheld cooler all day.  Our faire parking lot is like1/2 mile from front gate.  One more reason I don't go back to my car and have picnic lunches anymore.

oh, now that I'm thinking of it.  If I use a chiller tween the boobs, on an outfit I don't mind condensation on, how big of a damp spot would show?  Or does it dry too quick in the heat?

I have made little chillers that were filled with rice and i just plunked them in the freezer. But I am pretty much a boothie so I have a freezer on the fridge we keep the flowers in.. I lent one out to a friend and forgot to tell her that it was filled with rice and she dunked it in water... yea she had steamed rice lol

But I always space my chillers so I just plunk a few ice cubes down my bodice or have my Ice Minion do it for me

As for the bodice being safe the boning should be cased in some thing and hence no prob but I dont know that much you should ask the costume mavens!

Royal Glassmakers also sells these, I've seen their work at MI Renaissance Festival.  They also show up at beer tastings around the Detroit area and make custom mugs, so I've seen plenty of their work in person.  They always do a good job.

I know I've said it on here before but it bears repeating - bodice chillers are DANGEROUS!

The glass ones have been known to break.  Do you really want to pay for reconstructive surgery because of your bodice chiller breaking?

The pewter ones and plastic ones are dangerous because if you are that hot you might already be in a slight hyperthermia which will send your body into shock.  I have seen it happen with ice cubes and I've seen the glass bodice chillers break.  Thank God in the glass bodice chiller case it was only one piece that broke off and the cut was relatively slight but the danger is still very much there.

If you need to cool down, a wet handkerchief will help your body a lot more than anything that is pure ice right next to your heart.   If you are prone to overheating, don't wear velvet.  I swear, one of the main reasons I see people overheating is from wearing the wrong clothing.  Never value "but I feel pretty!" over your health - ever.   Make a "summer" set of garb and a "winter" set of garb - layers are wonderful for the winter.   Handkerchief weight linen is amazing stuff and can look quite nice with some embroidery or trim.   

Please, I really can't stress enough that these are dangerous.  Wet washclothes/Handkerchiefs are much safer and will help (as well as wearing appropriate clothing!).

  Another good substitute is those neck chiller things.   You can buy one or make one yourself:

to camouflage it, you can roll the finished (and hydrated) tube in a thin bit of linen or decorative fabric.

One of our friend's daughters worked at Bristol, so no matter what the weather, she was there and garbed per the costume directives.  She couldn't afford a bodice chiller, so she bought some freezer pops from the grocery store & put them in the freezer.  Then she wrapped one in a handkerchief and stuck it down her bodice.  It worked for her.
