Me too!  Me too!  All of the above, Ambios.  Loved seeing the clip from the Smothers Brothers...Here is a lovely version of a reworking of "My Lagan Love," that her brother-in-law, Richard Farina, wrote...Sandy Denny sings here, but I also loved when he played with Joan's sister, Mimi.  There isn't a recording of them doing this together online that I've been able to find yet.

On another note, Rick Wakeman actually uses a paintbrush roller on the keys in that segment...An early echo of when Keith Emerson will use daggers on his organ in the ELP heyday...

Lovely!  I really love Bert Jansch's version of Ewan McColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face..."  It's more upbeat than this one, even and way faster than the familiar Roberta Flack hit.  I didn't know that McColl wrote "Sally Free and Easy," which someone mentioned...Know that one from both Bert and also Alan Stivell did a nice version of it in broken English...

Oh, yes was firin up Crannog and the Gutterpups a few days ago. I got them strings for the Mando, but found the tuning pegs were damaged, so had to order them from my local shop and there's a large crack in the bowl back, and the pegs have to be cut to size since it's so old and all sizes then were smaller and not standardized. It seems like a lot of trouble, but a modern mandolin that looks like the one I have would cost close to a grand these days and this one after repairs will only have cost me 2 hundred, which yes I could've bought new, but the new one's don't have the charm and tone of older instruments and no stories. Mine is actually from the turn of the century. So two weeks ad I should be jammin out on my Mando.  Unfortunately, but not really too unfortunate, I won't make it the first weekend to fest, because Saturday Selfridge Air Force Base is having a free air show and the headliners, The Thunderbirds among many other good groups are going to be there. So even though I do love fest, this air show only comes around evry two years. And who knows how long they keep it free, and my dad and I have made it sort of a tradition to go evry time it comes around. But, you can bet I'll be at fest soon, I bought another season pass this year and plan on making all three days of Labor Day weekend since I have that as my vacation week. Sorry to rattle on, but I'm quite excited, so many good things happening this month.

Thinking of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (great band, everyone, check out the link Ambios posted), a wonderful Afro-Celt band is Baka Beyond, I was introduced to them through Fiona Richie's show, Thistle & Shamrock on NPR.

OK...so apologies in advance to the moderator that this post has a "dual purpose".  First, want to introduce a great song just composed by Terry Griffith, aka The Irish Troubador.  Many of you probably know him...I had the pleasure of meeting him in Ohio in May.

Now for the "off topic" portion.  The song above is in support of the Great Lakes Medieval Festival, which is in considerable trouble at this point.  Journey on over to the Great Lakes forum under Mid-Western faires to read more about their troubles.  Town Council / Trustees trying to run them out of the area....sound familiar, long term BARF patrons (read...LARGO??)  Please lend them your moral support...and if possible, patronage.  Know this is one of my older daughter's favorite festivals (lives in Columbus)

OK....off soapbox.....returning thread to it's musical purpose!
