Ser Niall

Great projects everyone!  Haven't been around for a while myself, had to take a break from costuming (stupid real life getting in the way...) but I'm looking to get the sewing machine back out.  Came here for some inspiration   ;D
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

OMG Rowen! thats an amazing idea! imay have to have that for day 2... :D i was planning on taking the dress out for at least one day, provided i can rig a stool in there (which i think i can). the one down side is having no place big enough to sit. my idea is to attach the stool inside, hanging from the frame, just reach in and plop the stool down... we shall see. hahaha
Like a milking stool? Haven't seen one in ages.
This old farmer that lived next door to us in rural Washington used to walk around with a T shaped contraption strapped to his butt. Nothing more than a 2x4 by 8" long flat  piece of wood with shallow hole bored into the middle of one side-then a single tapered chair leg nailed/glued in.  He would just stop an prop his butt up by dropping the leg to the ground and sitting on the cross piece. the best word to describe it would be 'butt crutch'.  He walked around with it on all day.

Never had enough courage to post in this section before But I am rather proud of this creation.
Made from Simplicity #3782, the lace on the cuffs I dyed with tea and added the shoulder treatments.
I have since changed out the clasps and added additional ones down the front.

Lovely work Pinn!  I have yet to get the courage up to make a doublet bodice.
I love that material, how heavy is it?

Very pretty, Pinn. I really like the epaulettes on the shoulders.

I am actually using the same pattern to make my daughter's new gown. I'm making style A without the sleeves or roll and then making the doublet separate so she has two ways to wear it. Hope I'm not making a mistake doing that, she's very hot natured.

Since you've already made this pattern, please tell me, did you do cartridge pleating in the back or follow the instructions and gather around the back? I ask because I've never cartridge pleated before, I usually knife pleat.

I'm not Pinn, but cartridge pleating is technically just a way of making very controlled, evenly-spaced gathers. If you have enough yardage, you should be able to do whatever kind of pleats you like.

Evie McCann

Thanks, Gem.  The instructions on this particular pattern say to gather the 6 side and back panels, but I'm thinking of trying my hand at cartridge pleating on this.  It's always scared me before, but I found a video on youtube and I've done some reading here on the forums, so I think I can do it.  We'll see.   :)

I recommend the cartridge pleating on the skirt,  there is just too much fabric for a "simple" gather.
It's not heavy at all and easy to move in.

It's honestly one of the SIMPLEST things you can do. Time consuming and tedious, yes. But not hard. Promise!!!

Kate's Magic Tip for cartridge pleating?  Use topstitching thread!  Three rows of topstitching thread for anything heavier than shirt-weight cloth in a skirt.  And Lady Katherine sent me some FANTASTIC 1" square gingham check when I couldn't get it in the UK, and it's THE BEST stuff for getting your cartridge pleats really neat and even!

I know I am really bad about posting in progress photos.
This is a different bodice pattern than I've used before and I don't think I'll use it again. I just could not alter out the armpit wrinkle.
But mostly I'm pleased with it.

Dona C, that's spectacular! (You really don't post enough photos of your work!  ;)) Can you tell us about the trim? It looks like gold embroidery on velvet... scrumptious!!!

DonaCatalina

Actually it is. A friend of mine did the hand embroidery in gold metallic floss on the strips of velvet. Then we sewed them to more velvet with corded trim edging.
