Hail and Well Met All!

I'm making Renaissance garb for my family (so I can learn more before I do one for myself!).  Our heritige is in part both Scottish and Irish.  I'm working on the entire outfits in pieces, so last year I created a leines for both my mother and father (intending to go with the Irish part) and pirate shirt for my brother (which is irrelivent for this topic).

This year I am getting ready to start the next part (late in the year for Christmas, I know).  I'm planning to tackle a kilt for my dad, but I'm having difficulty with deciding which part to do for my mom.  I (think) that leines were worn by both Irish and Scottish peoples of the time (although they seem to be more prevelent with the Irish), but past that I'm at a loss.

Should I just do a skirt(s) and a bodice, a kirtle without sleeves, an overdress? what do you think?

Also, even though the idea of 'clan tartans' is post-renaissance, my dad's really into that so I'm gonna go with it, should I incorperate that into my mothers look, or just have her carry an earasaid and leave the plaid at that?

I do something similar to the Shinrone gown.   What you could do is maybe a basic front lacing kirtle with a closed skirt.   Where the Shinrone gown has those strips rather than sleeves, line that with plaid.

Lady Renee Buchanan

Here are 2 different versions of the Buchanan tartan that I wear for faire.  This first has a tartan underskirt (actually the forepart is tartan, what you can't see is black broadcloth).  The overskirt is black with Tartan bands down the front.  The bodice is the tartan in the front, with black around the sides and back. Worn with a petticoat underneath instead of a farthingale.

The same underskirt with an Irish dress over it. With a farthingale.

Though both are the Buchanan tartan, the one I wear differs from my husband's, just enough to still be recognizable, but not identical.

If you were going for historically accurate, these probably wouldn't work, but we don't worry about that for ourselves.  Hope this helps and maybe gives you some ideas.
