My sister gave away the In-Styler she gave to me - nice, huh?  Call me ticked off.  In the meantime, I desperately need some help finding something to style my frizzy, bra strap length hair that I can do by myself & won't take up too much valuable real estate space in my suitcase.  Straighteners won't cut it because my hair is as fragile as spun glass due to the chemo damage.  I have hot rollers, which will suffice for this weekend, but take up way too much space suitcase wise.

Any ideas?

Now, I know you said straightener's are out but I want to tell you about the one I own.

http://www.remingtonstraighteners.co.uk/Remington_High_Protection_Fabric_Straightener_S2003.html

I bought mine at Target and was $40.

I have very thin hair that falls out pretty bad and every straightener I ever had pulled my hair. I found this one and it claimed to glide through hair with ease and not stick. Let me tell you its is my miracle straightener. Its covered in Teflon fabric and it does not clamp down on your hair.

It glides, never sticks or pulls and doesn't damage hair.

I hope this helped  ;)

What are you trying to do with it?  I'm assuming this is for Fair?

This year I mostly wore mine (a little shorter than yours) twisted and braided.  I style my hair when it's wet, because the curls grip better as they dry; but it has more body if I let it dry first.  You may need to experiment with product, but if your hair is long enough, the braid should hold everything in place.

Stand in front of the mirror (duh!).  Grasp a handful of hair near your right temple and twist it backward (toward the back of your head, not toward your face).  Continue gathering hair and twisting until all of your hair on the right side has been gathered.  Clip in place at the base of your neck.

Repeat on the left side.

Bring the two twists together, and divide into 3 sections.  Braid.  Fasten with whatever.

Or you can twist just the top of your hair back, letting the rest fall loose, or twist it back into a ponytail, or wrap the ponytail back up on itself and clip it up, or turn it into a bun... very versatile.

Lynn McMasters has a good tutorial on a period hairstyle, but it's hard to say how it'll work on longer hair:

bobby pins don't take up much space   :D    Just pin curl your hair and pin with the bobby pins.  Allow to dry while you sleep and when you wake up remove them and fluff the hair, move the curls where you want them, spray, etc.  It will work just as well as rollers, but requires no heat and doesn't damage the hair.  OH, apply some hair wax or gel to the hair while wet as you are curling it in the pin curls...it will help hold the curl better later.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.  I think I'll go w/pincurls & if it turns out awful I have the bobbies to pull it into a bun.  I used to put my jaw length hair in pincurls all the time back in the '70's.

I love pincurls....  Women who know anything about good curls, know pin curls never died   ;)....  they make beautiful curls and are the most gentle on hair.

I have stick straight hair and pin curls are the only way to get a curl that will last. My hair falls straight after an hour or so with any other method. Pincurls last me about 8hours without any hairspray. They rock!

Pretty. Odd.

Hey Taffy...you could also try wrag rolling...just put the strips into a ziploc bag and takes very little room when packing...also make sure whether you are pin curling or wrag rolling, to use a good de-frizz product first...

What type of headwear are you using? You could always get a hat or snood or the like to cover up a simple pony tail or barrette. Otherwise, they did wear their hair natural back in the day - rock what you have!  8)

I do also like those combs attached by the woven elastic beaded strings (sorry, their name has slipped my mind, but they were one of those "As Seen On TV" items for awhile now). My hair is only about shoulder length but is very dense and they've worked for me.

When you are doing pin curls dont forget hair goo! I use some that I picked up at Wally World, its about the consistancy of vasline it works great! Its in a little thing thats about the size of a really fat thread spool.

Is your frizzy hair curly at all?  If it is, I'd recommend "B Curly."  It's a leave-in conditioner made by Aveda that does wonders for taming frizzy curly hair.  Heck, it'd probably work even if you don't have curly hair.  I guess it's not really style advise, per se, but if you tame the frizzy, it should be much easier to do whatever you want with your hair.  :)

And now, I have a little bit of a thread hijack...

The ladies that do pin curls...do you think they can work for long hair?  By long I mean hip length + hair.  All the instructions I've seen online are done with short hair, and it looks like it may be impossible to do with really long hair.  Do you think it could work?

Thanks!

It absolutely can work on long hair...  however for your sanity you may want to do bigger sections than the standard 1 incher......  and, still, you may drive yourself crazy rolling them up just because you're going to feel like it is taking forevvvver to roll up....  but it can be done.  I think there are better options for hair that long, though....  if you are wanting to do something in the same manner that requires no heat, there are noodle rollers that are bendy tubes you roll the hair onto and then curl the sides of the tube over on themselves to hold...those work better for long hair.

I have waist lenght hair that is THICK annoyingly so. I have done pin curls with really fat sections and pins that are an as long as my pointer finger! And I need the hair goo that I mentioned in my earlier post.

But I forgot to mention this book it kicks some major booty on the hair styles in it.

Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells

its for pinup style hairdos but there are a lot that can be modified for faire hair. And you really dont need a cosmotologest to do it for you, and they are fun too ;D

As my hair stylist would say, "Always use product!"  Mousse, gel, spray  something!!!  On top of that use a high quality (not expensive)  hair appliances. When all else fails Pink foam rollers.

Sis came home from her guilt trip w/a new InStyler for me, which I used last weekend at the TRF steampunk invasion.  My hair ends up in a huge snarl ball by the end of the day, but I was able to brush it out w/a minimum of knots & f bombs.
