I am looking to do some completely different (for me) outfits this season. I lived in Turkiye for 3 1/2 years so thought a Ghawazee coat, coin bra, etc would be fun to try... any thoughts, suggestions, links to offer?
I'm was thinking of doing a Ghawazee coat also sometime in the future though. But I can offer you all my belly dancer links, hope they help.(was thinking of learning belly dance at one time, maybe still but again in the future for now)

This first site has some amazing coats, if you didn't want to make it yourself.

The other sites are either for patterns or pre-made belly dance wear.

I just bought two patterns to sew adjustable ghawazee coat and beladi dress, designed by madam x. I looked at some sites a few months ago, about covering bras. Folkwear also has a pattern under "ethnic," I think it was. I have several Simplicity patterns that I can use to make the choli/top.

they had a lot of info.

Hey MG,
My fiance and some of the other girls from the Feast Hall Belly Dancers (Cigany) made some ghawazee coats. Can't remember where she got the pattern from, but I think she made a copy of it as well.
The woman in the middle is wearing one of them. It is reversible. Also modified to show off the jingly bras.

Just in case you can't see the actual image. Here is the link.

Great links!
(I love this community! I have question, you all have answers!)
I get the gist of sewing the ghawazee coat, I get the gist of the pretty bra (still looking for good DIY site for that), I'm just fuzzy on the differences between the belly dancer and the ghawazee outfits. I have no intention of showing my belly (uh nothankyou, please!) but I love the idea of the something different. Plus I found some fun fabric that just screams ghawazee to me. lol
Most bellydancers use the ghawazee to cover up while not performing . . . well some of them do anyway. The one in the photo is just laced together in the front and on the sides. You can modify most patterns to do what you wish. One of the other performers in the group has one that actually overlays a bit (like a double breasted jacket) and has frog hooks for clasps. Hers is also reversible.
Here is a site on how to do a regular belly dance top/bra, I would think that a coin bra is the same but with coins sewn on it instead.

I know how to do that! My mum tricked out a normal bra when we were in a dance troupe!
What she did was buy a black bra (any color you want of course!)
Then she got some velveteen fabric and other shiny trims and some fringe. She
cut a template of the cup and cut the fabric out.
Once every thing was cut she hand sewed the velvet pieces on over the original cup fabric. One thing that she did not think of is that the cup kinda got squashed in the covering process so it went from a D to a C. So I would buy a bit bit to allow for the squish.
After that was sewed on she added her fringe and trim.
and Tada a cheap and easy but still good looking bra. Id post pics but the bra is in storage and I havent the slightest idea where.
Good luck! There had better be pictures!
My Gawazhee coat is from Alter Years, by Atira"s Fashions, who does patterns for belly dancing, men's and women's. It comes with three neckline and two sleeve variations. Simple and very adjustable. Also, many patterns for coin bras, various skirt styles, and cover-ups...

Would love to see pics of this... 3 necklines...?
I think I have the Atria's pattern too.
Alas, I am a technologically disadvantaged person, and have no photos. By three necklines, I mean different styles. 1) a very deep, nearly below the breast, scoop, 2) a deep sweetheart shape, and 3) a very deep v-shape. All of these are best worn with something on underneath. (Perhaps the decorated bra?) The skirts of the coat were split to the hips up the side seams. The sleeves were either elbow-length with tabs hanging from the back of the elbow, or simply elbow-length. There's an open seam under the arm. (ease of dancing and sweating) Button closure down the front. Mine's green cotton brocade, longer sleeve, ankle-length, deep v neck, worn over green cotton harem pants, and a white cotton kurta. sashes, belts, ankle bells, head wrap, fringe... Very comfy for those ungodly hot, damp September days we sometimes get at ORF...
Just found a Ghawazee coat tutorial for the sewing and time challenged. They took a thrift-store dress and converted it in no time at all!

Wonderful idea!
MG, I tracked down the website for Atira Fashions' patterns (http://www.artemisimports.com/patterns/). The images are all black and white line drawing and the necklines aren't really shown but I hope it helps.
Thanks for the link to the Ghawazee tutorial, mieljolie. The other tutorials on her site were interesting reading too.
Sounds awesome! Thanks for the info. :D
since the style of coat that it seems you are looking at is very modern, may I suggest a period, Renaissance alternative?

I *love* my Turkish coat and it's very comfortable to wear. Since the bra is a modern invention (WWI is when that became vogue), most people style their coats to create the uplift on its own or wear stays beneath the coat.
