Title: Closing Weekend Tailgate
Post by: Lady Guinness on September 30, 2008, 06:38:16 PM
I can hardly believe it is time to start talking about closing weekend already. We have been traveling alot this year to other faires to spend time with some amazing friends. Now it is time to spend the rest of the faire run in our wonderful shire here at MDRF with our awesome friends here and those that will be traveling in to our shire to visit. With that in mind lets talk tailgate for the closing "invasion" weekend!! So many people are coming together to share our shire that I want to make sure everything is covered. Let me throw out a few basics details for those that have not been to our tailgates before:

*we arrive between  0800-0830
*we all park to the left side of the gate
*if you arrive early we can park very close and have a 'block party" type event
*bring your favorite beverage to share
*bring your favorite food to share

I will bring coffee/cream/sugar and...ahem....a special sweetner. Pastries. And another special "morning" beverage. ;)

As time goes by I will see what is needed and bring more things to share. I am looking forward to seeing evereone and sharing our closing weekend with all of you.

Give me a break lass .... there are only so many hours in the day for us to party ... we have to kick this thing off early to maximise daylight! Not to worry, we will make it worth you while  ;D

Well, I won't be held responsible if you and The Brad have to carry me out to the car.  And anything I do or say past noon doesn't count!

Nor can anything I do or say past noon be held against me in a court of law!

Yes, The Brad shall be in attendance.

Charity - we  will miss you, Sir Wulf, and Capt. Fortune!  But we'll all be sending a huge burst of positive vibes your way!

Indeed! This shall be a closing weekend to remember..........or not...........that's for sure!

Dallan and Charity (and crew) - we are indeed sorry you won't be joining us. We shall raise a pint for you and will send warm wishes your way!

As for what to bring - I shall bring some libation and will endeavor to find some nice fruit to munch on (and maybe some cookies) - as well as anything else I can think of we might want.

Ladies, thank you and we'll miss you too. It's killing me that we can't make closing weekend but we'll be back on the 12th and 19th and will see you then. And of course there's CRF.

Dinky Wench, I don't think that I'm speaking out of turn here but you would be welcome at tailgate. It's a great group of people.

Dinkywench~you and anyone else new to our faire or tailgate are certainly welcome to join us. We always have a wonderful group of people to celebrate faire with.

Mehan & Amras~the smoke out does add a certain ambiance to tailgate!

Cpt. Morgan~just slide a pillow under our heads as you step over us to get to gate ::)

After this weekend and showing up to faire a little later than usual (0900 on Saturday) and already having to park several rows back just reinforced our need to be at tailgate on closing weekend around 0800. That way it should be easier for everyone to find us. It will be a wonderful time and I am so looking forward to spending quality time with friends before the chaos ensues when gate opens.

Yes - we got there just after you did apparently - and we had to park several cars away from you. We were surprised on how "full" the lot was getting already - at 0900!!

We will definitely try to be there earlier!

It's not like you asked, but ....

1) Make sure to see the Pyrates Royale at least once (preferably at the White Hart)

2) Ditto the O'Danny Girls

3) Absolutely do not miss Pub Sing

Everybody else can now fight over the rest of the day ;)

I may not have asked, but I absolutely will take recommendations to heart!  I do plan on seeing the Pyrates Royal.  I was told by someone else that the first show of the day (might that be at the White Hart?) was the best one.  I am always up for a good Pub Sing!
Who are the O'Danny Girls?

I feel like a giddy school girl!!!  The weekend is so close I can almost taste it!  The countdown to departure is started!

The Pyrates' first show is at the Globe Theatre.  Though it's easier to get seating, they're not miked there.  I personally prefer their performances at the White Hart because a) they have amplification there and b) they're free to be a bit less "family friendly" in a bar.  They're either a very musically inclined improv troupe or a musical group full of comedians and hams.

The O'Danny Girls are 3 wholesome Irish Catholic girls fresh off the boat from Ireland, singing songs taught to them by the sailors on the voyage over.  They're not at all family friendly (unless you're trying to get a family started, nudge nudge).  Though they have an 11:30 show at the Globe, I recommend the 3PM White Hart show for the same reasons.  As I've probably said elsewhere, they're the only group I've ever seen who's managed to work the Imperial Death March and Darth Vader into the La Di Dah song, and who routinely has to find rhymes for words like "ointment" and "uvula".

Though you didn't ask, Pub Sing is a cross between Whose Line Is It Anyway and the Rocky Horror Picture Show via shanty singing.  Expect to see weird stuff you can't explain to your friends.  Don't be surprised or intimidated if the rest of the audience seems to know more about what's going on than you do.  Treat it like going to see Rocky Horror for the first time Saturday night will probably be the wild and funny performance, while Sunday will probably be the more sentimental performance, with a good 15 to 20 minutes of slower, sentimental songs which may be more meaningful to regulars than visitors.  Generally everybody's hugging each other and trying not to weep openly during the last verse of Wild Mountain Thyme on Sunday night.

There are scores of other excellent shows and acts at faire, and I apologize in advance for having to ignore so many while singling out these very few.

You know what's bad? Three years of going to the ren faire and I have never been to pub sing :( I am ashamed.

For my money. . . .  the best shows to see are the 11 Pyrates Royale and 1130 O'Danny Girls. . .both at the Globe (where you can actually hear them to the back of the seating area). . .  and any Hilby show (he's back for closing weekend).

Hilby is by-far, the funniest act you will ever see at any Renaissance Festival . . .  That's not just my opinion. . .it's true.  (Trust me, he's German and if you don't agree. . .he haz vays of mekking you comply)

I'm, personally, not a big pub-sing fan.  I usta' be until all the routines became canned and the spontaneousness  (if that is indeed a word) of it all just disappeared.  However. . .  I stayed for both one of Cap'n Moone's and Princess Anna's PubSings and they were wonderful. . .  less so on the Diego PubSing which reminded me of the canned PubSings of the past. . . hey, there's good and bad with every season!

Again, that's just me and you might love every PubSing and get addicted to MDRF by that alone (it happens a lot!).  My suggestion is to get out to see lots of shows and not stand at the White Hart most of the day (which you'll see me do!).

What I'M most excited about is for the only time this season Cyn, Kyra, AND Alex will be with me for the weekend. . . the whole family . . . both days!  Huzzzahhh!

Best show in town happens before gate ... its called TAILGATE! Nothing like a good morning smoke with the finest of folk!

Dallan, I think what you brought last time was fantastic! Instead of 60 dozen bagels, maybe half that this time  ;D You guys are awesome!

Well since you didn't ask .........  ;D

If you are a fan of Shakespeare - DO NOT MISS Romeo and Juliet at the Globe - it has to be the most fabulously done "play at Faire" I've ever seen in all the years I've been attending faire. It's really spectacular. It starts at noon or 12:30 (can't remember) and it's the only showing of the day so you only have one shot per day.  If you miss it Saturday you'll have to see it Sunday - or not at all.  :)

I go to faire every weekend possible - in fact to keep things fresh we split our time between MDRF and PARF. I have seen all the Pyrates Royale, O'Danny Girls, Hilby, etc. shows and I'm sorry to say that for me, it's just same ol' same ol' with them all for the most part. Don't get me wrong - they're great and I really enjoy them........the first few times..........but just how many times is a person expected to see the same shows over and over again and actually enjoy seeing them? And for the most part they are the same each year with maybe a speckling of something different thrown in here and there - but the same nonetheless. The Romeo and Juliet play was something different. I was very pleasantly surprised and I highly recommend it.

Geeze - I hope that doesn't come off sounding like I don't like the Pyrates, Hilby, O'Danny etc. I really DO love them. I really don't mean any of that to say I don't like them - I think some of the regulars understand what I mean though.

I think Hilby tries to mix it up sometimes since he interacts with the audience.  He and my husband picked and poked at one another that rainy, muddy weekend since there was only a handful of people in the audience.  He brought me to tears of laughter that weekend.  Plus, should he drop anything he juggles....gotta have something to say about that!  I love Jonny Fox but he truely hasn't changed his act in the 10 years I've been going to the fest.

Hilby and Puke and Snot (*mourn*) are the only ones I will say "OMG we HAVE to see them!"  If we happen to pass by a show that looks good we'll sit down and watch.  Although I've always wanted to catch that hypnotist (name escapes me atm) and I always somehow end up missing it. :(

OK, getting back to the tailgate, Bruce and I will be there but maybe not at 8:00 sharp.  It takes us over 90 minutes to drive up.  Not sure what I will be bringing just yet.  As for shows to see, all of the above mentioned are great but don't forget the Rogues, Shakespeare's Scum, The Bloody Drama, and the "Babes" who will also be there for closing weekend.  So much to see...
It is a sentimental time with lots of hugs and goodbyes - till we meet at PARF the next weekend.  ;D    I am so hoping a few of you will be going (fingers crossed).

April you will want your camera ready for DoW.  The rest of you -- No, I am not going to be the "cone" again and am working on my new garb this week.  Barb, are you ready with yours?   Just 5 more days now.

Dallan~ thank you for your sentiments. I think the table is great, I love it when we can spread out. I wish you guys could be there Saturday as well but we will take what we can get ;)

For those that have not been to our lovely shire before there is so much to see and enjoy that it can almost be overwhelming. Any choice you make I feel will be the right one.

We do tend to gather at certain pubs (other than the obvious reasons) that is where we find our friends. Once you see a show or three and do some shopping then please swing by to have a few pints with your Revel Grove friends. The White Hart is a wonderful place to be with friends and hear some great entertainment, plus the best bartender is there! ::) Other friends prefer the Dragon Inn. Either place I promise you will enjoy!

I cannot not wait to meet those that are new to MDRF and I cannot wait to see all my special friends. Hugs!!

For my part, this is the same reason I *can* watch the Pyrates and the O'Dannys over and over again (along with some of the other musical acts).  Out of 5 albums worth of material, they'll sing maybe 6 songs in a set (sometimes only 3 or 4 if they get Darcy to crack up during Paddy West or the Pirate Parts song, or if Captain Moone goes way off script during the swearing in ceremony).  I'll watch 3 or 4 of their sets a day and not hear a song repeated.  Then again, everything boils down to personal taste.  If it's not comedy or *very* good serious music, I probably won't be interested, and I don't think any of the Pyrates can do anything for more than 30 seconds without being funny.

Though we've managed to reach (slightly) different conclusions, I still think we're in "violent agreement" ;)

Wait, people go to MDRF not in garb?

Lady Di and I have a 6 and 11 year old that will be with us on Sunday (as they do most days we attend), both are boys. The group is an amazing bunch of people and your children will be welcome. The tailgate is relatively "safe" for them since it's early and the beverages have only just started. If you reunite with the group throughout the day at pub you may need to be a little more careful. Yours are young enough to have most comments go over their head. My 11 year old however finds some of our friends very "interesting" and "educational". (Not mentioning any names here.) I also find it helpful if other kids are around. They tend to be more interested in each other than adult conversation. If you are attending Sunday please join us. Seek me out and I'll introduce our kids to yours. It would be great for my boys to have someone to hang out with at tailgate. We shouldn't be hard to find. We will be a pirate family and I'll be wearing my R/F pin.

Oh - I'm sorry Dallan. We were attending PARF last weekend. We divide out time between MD and PA since they are running concurrently and we have season passes to both. We will definitely be at MD this coming weekend - we can catch up then!  :)

Master Will - again I must say I love Pyrates and O'Danny and Hilby and the myriad of other acts in the shire - so please don't anyone get me wrong on that sentiment. They are all fabulous and entertaining and wonderful! But after attending faire several days and seeing the acts over and over again I just get to the point that I've seen enough and go seeking out something different. This is why Romeo and Juliet SO struck my fancy this year. It is serious Shakespeare and is so beautifully done - the actors are splendid and there are just enough props to make the production seem complete but not overdone. I must say I really enjoyed it - it was a breath of fresh air - a serious Shakespearean production at faire is a thing to behold!

And yes I'm a Shakespeare dweeb - studied his works in college along with Chaucer - and I was a science major - lol!  ;)

Steev..I agree with Dallan and Scotsman. You are very welcome to join us. We will be parked in the first row of cars with alot of people gathered to put you in the mood for what is behind the gates. Now, the tailgate that occurs in the Evening while one waits for the lot to empty may be another story all together for the children. You are still welcome to attend however the conversation may be a wee bit different! ::) I look forward to meeting you and your family.

This production has been wonderful! (and not just because I'm in it)  It does start promptly at noon: Just after the O'Dannys finish their set on the Globe, you hear Juliet singing a haunting song in Portuguese, composed specifically for this production.  Then the prologue (by Micky Hooligan, I might add) followed by the rumble and etc.

By the way, we have many other good theatrical productions, including the Court dramas---the Court and Village stories told as a 3 act play throughout the day (9:50 AM outside the front gate for the prologue; 11:00 AM "The Letter" that sets the King Henry and Queen Katherine Howard tale, at the Gatehouse Stage; 3:00 PM "The Chess Game" between King Henry and Queen Katherine, with kibbitzing by Norfolk, Thomas Culpepper, etc., at the Globe; and the conclusion: "Court's Court" at the Gatehouse Stage at 5 PM.

And for children of all ages, we have the Camelot Children's Theater (including yours truly) performing at the Gatehouse Stage:  2:00 is our version of "Little Red Riding Hood" and at 4:00 that great classic, "The Three Sillies".

Seriously, I'll be in green burlap English "peasant-wear", lovely wife Annie will be in "old gold" Irish leine dress, two little girls in scarlet and *gasp* purple. (we couldn't talk her out of the color so our story is that we're faithful servants acting as foster family for the acknowledged royal bastard...).

I will do my best to convince the hubby to drop off the kids early and meet up for the tailgate but it's hard to wake a hibernating bear on his day off.  :p

The overnight low on Saturday looks like it could be in the 30s. Sunday's tailgate may be a bit chilly. I'm thinking I should bring a batch of my Hot Spiced Cider.

That sounds like it'll go very nicely with what I'm planning to bring to munch on..... :)

As much as I enjoy food and booze, it will be a much more fulfilling moment to be around my friends for the last two days of something we all love to be involved with.  Sure, we meet through www.friendsofmdrf.org through the year at a few parties and get-togethers . . .  but it's not the same as an early-morning tailgate sponsored by Scotsman and Lady Guinness . . .  nor is it comparable to the hugs from Analise (who has the single most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen. . . I mean outside of my wife's. . .whew. . . good catch). . . or the squitch that I share with my brother Amras.  Each weekend we share that before-faire moment will always be emblazened in my memory. . .  I don't need to take photos of the tailgates as they contain so much love.

. . .and then we get to the final weekend.  I look forward to it for one reason. . . Captain Morgan.  An Ohio visitor, I've had a crush on her for years now like some 11-year-old kid who looks forward to summer camp just to get a wink or a smile from a babe he only sees that one time each year.  Silly, huh?

I can't believe 2008 is all but over.  New friends have been made . . .  old friends have continued . . .  and the drama was almost non-existent! . . .  and the only sorrow that I may feel is that there's a very good chance that Sir Dragon/Ron Santos won't be able to share these moments with us in a corporal form.  He will be the one element that we'll all miss next season.

In his honor, we should give him our honor and a toasted blessing and then toast all that gather with us because the past is gone, the future is uncertain, but the present. . .and all those who share their lives with us. . . are what we have.

I believe in what my grandfather said "Cherish today because it only happens once. . .  and they call it the 'present' for a reason."   Emrys Fleet, the Ratcatcher of MDRF has a similar phrase to end his show. . .and they're both right, m'thinks.

So all of you present this weekend for the tailgate. . . .  expect a huge hug and kiss from one appreciative Black Fox.

Very sweet words Sir Black Fox. :)

The hubby is all up for meeting you all at the tailgate!  Only...not sure what to bring. :(  I'm working 3-11 today which means I won't have time to bake something (which sucks cause I love to bake).  There's an amish market down the road, might just pick up some fresh cider from there and whatever else I can find if that's alright with everyone.

Wow, yesterday was a magnificent day! Thanks to Scotsman and Lady G for hosting the tailgate. Lady Di and I had a great time from tailgate through pub sing. Hecht, even the parking lot wasn't bad after close. We've met so many new friends this year and we can't wait until next. There was something magical about final pub sing again this year. Maybe it's the cool crisp feel of autumn; maybe it's the darkness or the fact that it's the close of the season or maybe a combination of all. Even our boys could feel that something was happening as the pub noise slowly subsided and people either sang or listened quietly.

We are fortunate that we have found something that the entire family enjoys to do so much together.

It was most wonderful to see everyone this past weekend! We so enjoyed the company of all our fine friends! And we are really glad all the visiting shirefolk from the northerly shires could join us for our closing festivities! It is always such a pleasure to see you all!

A hearty thanks to Lady Guinness and Scotsman for hosting a most memorable tailgate! As usual the food was remarkable, the drink was flowing and the company was splendid!  :)

I'm so sorry we missed the tailgate.  My husband and I arranged to the kids to spend the night and the grandparents the night before just so we could get up early and head out - only the alarm clock failed to go off at 7, and instead we woke up at 9.  Bummer. :(

Next year we'll be there for sure!

Thank you all for a wonderful tailgate party!  It was great to meet many of you, we hope to meet more of you at other events.  It was also great to see several of you as we wandered the faire.  The experience gets richer the more familiar it becomes!  Thanks to Scotsman and Lady Guinness for the kind host(ess)ing, hope to keep in touch with some of you during the bleak midwinter until VARF.  Three stand-out notes:  Is not Hilby the coolest thing in the world? Was not the last joust astonishing?  2 knights knocked off their horses and one dragged by his stirrup the length of the field!  Last, was anyone present at the Wolgemut performances where some punk local walked by heckling and boo-ing?  I wondered if it would be appropriate behavior to go and break a head or if that would be frowned upon...  For what it's worth if any of the performers from Wolgemut stumble upon this, we saw two of your performances on Sunday and thought they were wonderful.  Please come back next year!

Regards to you all and keep in touch!

Thank you all for the kind words. It is hard to believe that faire has come and gone. So much has transpired throughout this faire season. Some very happy memories and some very sad ones as well. With each I will hold all my faire friends/family close to my heart. There is truly no one like a faire person...we are a special group of people.

Thank you everyone for sharing tailgate with us. The food/beverages that everyone brought was just awesome.
Dallan thanks for sharing the "recipe"  ::) it was warming for such a chilly morning.
Annalise and everyone who brought such yummy  desserts thank you (boy I really need to expand my gym time)
Thank you all for the pleasure of your company....I cannot wait till next time... ;D

It was great getting to meet everyone!  I miss you all already.  :'(  It was such a warm welcome that I felt like I was greeting old friends instead of new ones!
You're right, Lady Guinness, there is no one quite like ren folk...  I hope to see you all soon.

We caught their two earlier shows and didn't notice a heckler....was it a later show?  Bashing booers...could be a fun sport.  We love Wolgemut too and can't wait to see them again next year.
