Didn't know about posting these in here vs. sewing but seeing as jousters are the ones who truly appreciate horse clothing and sets of colors. Just finished this stuff and would love to know what you guys think. Now I want to make clothes for my horses although they truly have no place to wear them. Oh and if you guys have cool pics of horse clothes post them! It's great to see what different riders are wearing.

All beautifully done. I'm particularly fond of the one above as it appears one is honoring the Knights of Malta.
One must also share images of the phoenix (?) caparison when it is draped over its preferred steed.
Thanks Sir William, that's Jefferson Pike, he jousts with Noble Cause and works with the H-lats and he heads up the east coast Knights of the Guild program (teaches kids about chivalry through the codes of the knights). Got a note this afternoon that he used the headpiece this weekend and is going to try to get me some pics with that on. I'm a sucker for a well dressed horse LOL. Nothing so stunning as watching a horse gallop out in full dress onto the field bearing an armored knight, flags flying in the wind.

A most honorable man indeed.

I love the way the horse and the caparison look in that picture.
stunning Gwen! I really want to go to the National Armoury in England. I'd acually like to make a trip to Europe to specifically study horse trappings and garb. With my spare change of course!
I must say after seeing all these photos, I feel the desire to purchase a horse and begin riding again.
Gorgeous pictures, Thanks for sharing !

This may beome my favorite new thread. I love horses. To me they are one of the most gorgeous and beautiful creatures on earth. I love taking pictures of horses and to have them displayed here in all their finery is a pleasure to see. And to have the horses paired with some fine looking knights dressed very handsomely in their finest armor is an added bonus.
As i have mentioned earlier all the pictures are gorgeous. I especially like the first two photo's in the beggining. The color combinations are very striking. The rider's red hair, the green and gold colors, and the rich black color of the horse.
Reminded me of a celtic warrior goddess.
Also the last photo that Gwen posted . Very nice.
Thanks again for sharing these wonderful pictures. :)
These are beautiful, impressive and stunning!
Lady Harrogate, I was looking for patterns/directions to make caparisons, found a few, but not this impressive. Do you design your own?
What about the crests, mantles, etc. on the helmets, how are they made? How do they attach to the helmets? I have been looking for info on that, also, as I want to make something similar for 2010. I already bought a griffin for the crest.
Thank you. :)
sorry it took me so long to respond. I'd been in the hospital when you posted and it's been a little nuts since then. I have all my own patterns and design my own heraldry based on what the customer is looking for. There is a lot of symbolism in the emblems so many times if someone isn't sure of what they want then I'll come up with ideas based on their personality, character traits or that of their character. If you are looking for patterns drop me a private note as I do custom patterning. I also design heraldry for those that sew their own stuff but need a little extra help with the designing. I'll write more a little later. Gotta run lunch to the kids now LOL
I just finished a few more projects and thought I'd post. Gwen, hope you'll post some more pics too, love the historic enterprises stuff! Are you the one that makes the Caparisons for them? Love the historical accuracy. Mine tend to be more theatrical, I try to keep the historical look but with a little theatrical liberty. I think my next big project is going to be an embroidered saddle pad for my horse. I'm also working on a couple of modern caparisons, one inspired by NASCAR and another for a team that does more fantasy inspired joust shows.
A riding cloak I made for an SCA member...

one I've posted when it was lying flat but here's a picture of it on the horse and rider...(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad17/legendsandladies/renaissance/35273_1157913003465_1696976621_292974_7569885_n.jpg)

while the striped caparison is one of my faves, this last one was kind of my baby...I wanted to mimic horse armor but make it soft so it's easy to travel with, not as hot and heavy on the horse, etc. There are definitely things I want to change on it and Bill was also wearing it with his biggest horse in this joust so it was extended all the way out leaving more of the horse showing in the middle than I usually like but overall I like the look, kind of like frosting for a horse LOL. He seemed to get a good response from it too which is always nice to hear.

thanks to Kay Schlump for the pics of Steve Cowan and Bill Burch, taken at the extreme jousting tournament in Bristol WI on July 30,2010
Gwen and I own and operate Historic Enterprises. She does the clothing (and designs and builds all the caparisons), and I do the arms and armour. Together we develop the accessories and manage things. We also run WorldJoust Tournaments (worldjoust.com) and produce the Tournament of the Phoenix. I teach jousting and medieval horsemanship (knightschool.us). HE may appear to be a larger company than it is, but it's just the two of us, with our two employees. It's a family business and our full-time occupation.

Mr. Hedgecock,
Pleased to make your acquaintance. I am the guy who just ordered the 8 lances, 3 vamplates, and other assorted lance equipment from your website. I look forward to receiving them!
We are also very interested in attending your "Tournament of the Phoenix" if we are able to clear the time.
Take care,

I am the same way, just a single employee and I have a few friends who are wonderful seamstresses who I pay to help if I get seriously swamped which doesn't happen often. You're work is wonderful. My friend Hollis speaks highly of you and the business and recommended I friend you on FB the other week. I love the concept of the knightschool too. I can imagine you stay pretty busy LOL
I just realized the way I worded that sounded funny! I stay pretty busy but rare that I take on so much as to need to hire help. Because I put a warrenty on my stuff I prefer to do the work myself so I can make sure it's up to the standards I have for myself. Not to mention caparisons are not something many people want to make LOL. My kids are all learning to design and sew so maybe in another 5-10 years it will turn into a family business.

Hi,
Pleased to meet you too. Thanks lots for the order. Really hope you can make it out to our event, I think you'll love it. Some of the most serious competitive jousting and combat going on in the world today. As I understand it, your group is getting into jousting soon, so I think you'd find a lot of value in coming out to see the Tournament of the Phoenix. Please be sure to come by an introduce yourself!
